Selfies from younger days

in art •  7 years ago

Here are some selfies I painted in Photoshop, or "self-portraits" as they were known before the smart phone... :)

Obviously some time ago, because now I'm 58, all my hair is grey and in fact I been keeping it shaved real short for many years...
They were early on in my Photoshop painting career. I actually feel I haven't developed much since then, except maybe I'm somewhat better now at constructing a face in 3/4 angle, and perhaps my color choices would have been slightly different now.

The first has no sketches with it that I could find in my archives, but the ones after that are sketches of another selfie I never finished. So they still show the way I went about it.

The process: I used a scanned image of raw linen canvas (which I had access to at the time because I was still painting with real paints back then), and sketched on top with a thin pencil like brush.

Then I added a brown "wash" with a larger more transparent brush. This replicates fairly closely how I worked with real oil paints.

Some more wash. Next would have come thicker more opaque paints as you see in the first image. But I became dissatisfied with the basic construction of the head and went on to some other project.

My name is Steven Stahlberg, I joined Steemit in December 2017. I was born in Australia, grew up in Sweden, but now live with my wife in Kuala Lumpur. I've lived here about nine years so far, and love it!
I work as a lead artist in a game company here. My two sons live in Sweden. I'm working on a graphic novel in my spare time, which I will start posting soon. I use an older version of Photoshop with an old Wacom Intuos 3 (larger size).
I do self-upvote, but I wait so I'm not the first. I don't buy votes. Thanks for watching!

Your portrait artworks look great, both the younger self and current self! Bet your skills are even more refined than the younger years too. Bravo! 👍

wow amazing bro

Really good work! Imagine, there are no smartphones and all the teenagers have also to draw their selfies for hours... :D

I've been checking your art for a while and I always wondered what you look like (or any other artist looks like). Your steps to putting down the foundation for your self portrait is just like how you'd paint traditionally, no wonder your digital things feel quite "real".

What's your graphic novel about and is there an estimate on when you'll start posting?
