in art •  8 years ago

Prince William has paid a moving tribute to his mother, saying she still inspires “countless acts of compassion and bravery”.With Prince Harry at his side, Wills pointed out Diana was only 36 when she died in a Paris car crash 20 years ago. He will be 35 next month. The princes were presenting an inaugural award celebrating their mother’s memory to mark two decades since her tragic death. The royal brothers were making their first joint appearance at an event run by the Diana Award, established to promote their mother’s belief in the positive power of young people.

Speaking at St James’s Palace, where the awards ceremony was held, William said: “This summer marks 20 years since our mother died and she achieved so much in her life, from helping to shatter the stigma around Aids, to fighting to ban landmines and supporting the homeless - she touched the lives of millions.“The truth is though, she was taken at only 36, just slightly older then I am today.

The 20 young winners, who come from the UK, United States, Canada, India, Belize and the United Arab Emirates, were recognised for their efforts creating positive social change in their communities and countries. Those receiving the Legacy Award have demonstrated qualities of kindness, compassion and service. Before the presentations Diana’s sons chatted with the winners, aged 11 to late teens, to hear their stories.Harry told some of the recipients: “I cannot believe how young you all are, most of you are still at school. When you get some spare time on your hands you’re saving lives and inspiring people.“You should be absolutely proud of what you’ve started and what you’ve achieved, you’re still in your teenage years - don’t stop now guys.”

Harry also spoke at length to Jemima Browning, 16, from Stutton, North Yorkshire, who has dedicated hours of her time to improving the lives of young people with disabilities through swimming, inspired by her brother who has Down’s.He also spent several minutes discussing social media with the young people gathered in the Throne Room at the Palace.
