Jupiter Sunset - A Pseudo-abstract Digital Painting

in art •  8 years ago

Jupiter Sunset

I've recently been experimenting with digital art as a way of making it easier to get back into painting with minimal fuss, mess and cost.

Most of what I'm making isn't going to be of the quality or value that justifies actual oil paints, canvas and the long time it takes to dry - plus since I have cats it is not very practical to use real media.

Anyway this is one piece that I actually like!

The Inspiration For This

As I've said before I like textures and abstract work and this is inspired by a combination of some of the work I like by artists like Rothko, as well as high resolution images of the planet Jupiter and the colours of a sunset.

The pattern of lines with a more organic and slightly chaotic feel is also inspired by imagery of gas giants like Jupiter.

I hope you like it. Also (as I usually say) feel free to use it in your own posts if you can find a use for it. If people like this kind of thing I can do more.

How It Was Created

It was created on my Ipad using ARTRAGE.

This is an app I particularly like because it simulates the textures and feel of real brushes and other media without being overly complicated.

It is also available on Windows and MacOs and gives you many of the features of Corel Painter for a fraction of the price and doesn't require the monster system which that application necessitates.

BTW if you have any other recommendations for simple painting apps (Iphone or Desktop) that have realistic media please let me know.

Oooo, I love this! The way it's simulated the paint and brush strokes is amazing! Gonna check it out now. Thanks! :)

Just bought the app! :)

Cool let me know how you get on!

Loving it so far. Now I just need to learn how to paint! :)

Well it is pretty easy to do stuff like this!

Yeah, I might start off slow with some "Abstract" stuff :-)

great idea on painting the minimalist way -
thank you!
you just gave me an idea to start painting on my note 1 again

What brush settings were you using for the yellow band right at the top? I'm trying to reproduce the texture with the occasional lumps you've got there.

I used the Oil brush - it's the big fat one.

Those are nice colors and I love the gradients. They seem so relaxed and mellow until the eyes are drawn to that light strip in the middle, which really shines through. That's when I realized it might be more than a sunset, just before I read the Jupiter part.

Cats don't do digital?

Thanks. Well the cats do like sitting on my wacom tablet but they can't really do much to damage it!

I like the quality of the end result.

Thank you!

I like the shift in colour gradation from the vivid yellow and orange palette into the somber reds. At first glance I thought it was an alien sky - I've been visiting a number of astronomy sites and then I saw the title. Hard to believe this is digital painting because of the brush strokes. You have cats? ha ha, I sympathize. My tabby is into everything so I imagine paints would be out. Very beautiful

Thank you. Yes my cats get everywhere.

Nice image, you can get lost inside while looking at it ! Haven't heard about this app so thanks for sharing :)

Thanks!

@thecryptofiend - That is created by digital painting? It absolutely looks like oil on canvas. The texture and flow is very realistic. I have used Artrage on my iPad before but never could produce such a masterpiece by wizardry like yours. I really like the blend of Jupitor environment waviness and Sunset orange hue colors of earth. Very nice. Upvoted.

Update at my end is that - Usually I write blogs about wildlife or travel photography but a stray dog and a crafty cat made me think of Dog/Cat person personalities and I wrote a blog about it with pictures and some stats. I request you to take a look when you have time and provide your valuable comments. Your comments enhance my Steemit experience. Thanks

Thank you so much!

That is really cool, I am going to have to check it out. Have you used Krita?

No what is it?

It's a really nice paiting! :D

Thanks!

I am really suprised by the texture an app can simulate. I wonder @thecryptofiend does it feel like painting? Do you get the resistance to surface?

Not really - at least not in the same way. I think eventually technology will allow replication of things like that but it is not there yet. With the wacom tablets you can sue different nibs though which change the resistance somewhat. On an Ipad you would need to use different pens.

I thought as much, it will be interesting when that is possible and I do wonder what effect that will have traditional painting.

Artrage is the bomb! I thought it was physical medium at first lol

Thanks - yes and for the price it is unbeatable!

Your Jupiter sunset looks great. I like the colors

Nice one Master of Steemit - good fit for my #Sunthursday challenge too - seems you have indeed a lot talents across many areas

Thank you so much mate. I'm never sure if they are any good or not so your kind words really help. Most stuff I do it and then I file it away because I'm scared of showing it. Thank you!

I know what you mean! You are much too modest mate

I'm very curious about the app now. I took to staring at the art and couldn't believe it's digital with all the texture and brush strokes. Great job! (And your cats must want to start painting, too!)

Lol they want to do everything I do!

I definitely thought Rothko immediately, so I'd say it's a success. Those textures are fantastic, what an impressive app! Have you seen this Rothko? This is at the Nelson-Atkins museum in Kansas City, and the picture obviously doesn't come close to doing it justice, but in person it sucks you in and almost pulls you towards sleep:

Wow thank you so much. I love Rothko - sadly never seen one in real life. Hopefully one day!

They seem to have one or two in most museums I've visited because he was so prolific. Shouldn't be too hard to find if you search around!

I need to see if they have any in London next time I'm there.

There are. Check before you come as they may be on loan, but there is usually a Rothko Room at either the Tate Modern or the Tate Britain, both on the Thames in London. It's comprised of a group of paintings that were commissioned for a New York restaurant, and was donated to the museum on the condition that they always be displayed together. I'd highly recommend it, I could personally sit there for hours, and it's usually quite peaceful too. Great painting, and definitely Rothko like, but also with a hint of Edward Hopper too.

Thanks I will definitely check them out next time I'm there!

I've never heard of digital paintings! Is Artrage easy to use?

It is but I would recommend using a wacom or similar tablet to get the most out of it on desktop or a pen if you are on Ipad.

Thanks for the info, and great post!

I'll look into fining a cheap pin on Amazon or something. I've been looking to create something original to put on the cover of all of my vlog posts, so this looks like a great app to do just that. I can't wait to get all creative and what not haha

You should give a try I'm sure you will enjoy it!

Love this :)

Thank you:)

@thecryptofiend nice image

Thank you:)

That amber is my favorite of the colors. I wonder if the app is on Google Play, too.

Thanks! I think it should be as the desktop version is multiplatform.

Nice ,this has some vibes to it

Thank you:)

This is a pretty awesome picture! I love the layering of the colors :)

Thank you!

nice

Thank you :)

Wait... is this all digital or is it physical artwork that has been manipulated and retouched with ARTAGE?
If it is purely digital I can't tell the difference between real oil paintings and this virtual one haha.
Amazing gradient with blends of so many colours that go well together.
Great Job, I can't wait to see more.

Thank you. Yes it is purely digital - doing something like this with real oil paint would take weeks to dry unless I used very thin quick drying paint.

looks like a nice painting on a wall man

Thank you!

It looks like a real painting, the horizontal lines are so realistic. The colors and their apparent reflections seem so naturalistic. Good work and great app!

Thank you. That is what I like about ArtRage - it gives realistic textures and media without the cost of more professional apps like Corel Painter.

You mentioned one of the nicknames we have for my boss. Vera and I often refer to the Emperor as a "Gas Giant".

Lol I can imagine!

Nice post @thecryptofiend, thanks for sharing this post.

Thank you:)

U're welcome @thecryptofiend

beautiful piece of art, just perfect!

Thanks:)

This is cool and much more pleasant than trying to watch a sunset from Jupiter or anywhere close to Jupiter. :-P

Lol:)

Thank you @thecryptofiend for your advice! I wish you have a good time!

Thank you:)

I really like the analogous colour harmony. It's a very atmospheric space.

Thank you!

I can imagine that on my wall, but it doesnt look hard to paint, am i true?

Not hard to paint at all you just need to know when to stop!

Very pretty painting. That is a very interesting concept and view point. I love space and seeing such a sight in real life much like your painting coming to life would be amazing.

Thank you:)

No worries, Thanks for the up vote

meep

wow thats amazing! great work

Thank you:)

Digital paintings are new to me. I'm glad to see you post about. Thanking Steemit for that. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome!

Beautiful art! It's perfect :)

Upvoted!

Thank you!

Put a sun in there it will then look like a Sunset, gorgeous :)

Thank you. That is kind of what I was initially going for but then it started making me think more of Jupiter!

Yeah that springs to mind too :)

Looks a bit like oil painting!)

Yes that is why I like this app. You should try it out if you like painting.

Every time i see a work of art i'm one step closer to try it lol.

Give it a try and send me the link! Now you have no excuse :)

The colors are just stunning! Amazing share my friend!

Thank you:)

Beautiful art. Thanks for sharing about the app you used. I'll have to check it out. Lately we've been doing the painting where you get the supplies, a lesson, and wine or beer. You wouldn't have to worry about the cats then.

Sounds cool!
