Jabberwocky

I drew this the old-fashioned way, with dip pen almost 25 years ago
india ink on paper - 1993 - 34 x 52 cm - 13½ x 20½ inches
as a tribute to Lewis Carroll

JABBERWOCKY -1993

"Jabberwocky"

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Like these a lot. Used to do some etching and printing like this when I was in art school.

I've done etching also - should post some, sometime. Ink drawings are rare for me, my medium is graphite and sometimes charcoal.

wow! lots to look at. Is Waldo in there somewhere?

Waldo ran away before I could get him in there ;)

At least the Jabberwock didn't get him.

Can't be so sure about that. i wasn't watching what happened after.

I was so excited to see this. One of my favourite poems and what a wonderful illustration! Extra admiration for using a dip pen too- my drawing tool of choice but on some occasions also my nemesis!

thank you kindly! the dip pen is perhaps the only ink drawing tool I am comfortable with. I tried micron pens and didn't like them. I had to work with micron pens on a joint project called "Antipodes" - for now I won't give away any more, it will be a future post that I hope will be a blockbuster!

Ooohh can't wait!

Amazing detail! I've always liked Jabberwoky and sometimes quote lines of it to my grandchildren. Great post!

Thank you! I will check it out.

Nice, reminds me somewhat of the work of fantasy horror artist, Ian Miller, one of my own artist influences.

he is my generation, and similar influences, such as Albrecht Dürer
