Here are the various stages of a pencil portrait that I drew recently.
Stage 1 - get the shape of the face and the outline of the key features
Stage 2 - start adding tone
Stage 3 - darken the shading to give the face more shape and define the features better
Stage 4 - make sure the whole drawing is at the same level so that no one area is ahead of any other area
Stage 5 - the finished piece!
