The Art Factory [BLDG 0014] : 3D Modeling a Warehouse of Arts and Culture

BLOCKTOWN is a community art project powered through your comments and engagement. It’s an experimental game of city-making, a digital Madurodam. With each post, a new layer of buildings will be added to the Town. Your photographs, quotes, stories and feedback are the raw materials that drive construction for each new layer.

A New Character!

Thanks to @heymattsokol for the Art Factory! This building in BLOCKTOWN was an abandoned industrial warehouse seeking a new home town. Don't let the modest blue exterior fool you, there's a lot of color brewing inside. These blocks are bubbling with art, culture and music. Stay tuned for a rendered peek indoors...

Take a look at the design process (below) assembling and modeling the blocky structure, beginning with the 2D image submission and growing the 3D modeled character.

How to Play

Take a look at the announcement post, here. Each building and landscape element of BLOCKTOWN will be derived directly from your comments. Photographs, quotes and stories will inspire their own design logic and manifest themselves as 3D characters within the Town.

If you'd like to participate beyond image comments, download the Rhino template file I've prepared on Github and assemble a custom building of your own. Once you re-upload it, I'll add it in. Update - I'll be sharing more 3D files in the next post that should work on Sketchup / Max / Blender etc.

An Experiment in Building Community

Through this project - I hope to engage in a broader dialogue with fellow Steemians about their own sense of place and placemaking. These types of game-structured conversations are a fascinating way of learning more about what a person defines as his or her “community.” It’s a way of connecting to one another through the geographies we are deeply tied to and knowledgeable of. In a world of links, likes, upvotes and IP addresses, it’s exciting to find ways of bridging the digital divide and connecting with those on the other side of the screen.

Let's get building!

Awesome!!! At long last we can get the art scene in blocktown moving. And right now we have a monopoly on the local culture - so nothing but Drum n Bass and Math Rock for the foreseeable future :-D

Great job @voronoi the building looks great!!

Thanks for the idea Matt! Finally the art scene is beginning to come together. And you've got some nice real estate there :D

It is about making you think from a different perspective..
It is about writing without any expectations of UPVOTES..

This is an awesome initiative !

So, just post a photo of a building/inspiration then ? maybe a bit of story ?

hmmm....

What about an Earth Ship for the town ?

The basic idea for blocktown would be something where you can see "tires" or other recycled building materials kind of sticking out. There's an infinite variation, but they all tend to have big front windows and roundish forms like the digital render below.

sir Such a wonderful and thankful work... Actually....I'm always respect to your works

Beautiful pos, i like...

i love this project! very clean and smart concept

very interesting post @voronoi - this is an excellent idea that I have just recently discovered, but will make sure to support as much as I can.

I myself and building a small incubator for absolute beginners on Steemit, which will be free of charge. I am looking to get 5,000 SP leased in order to support newcomers, in order to increase the retention rate of daily active users. I am also running my Journey to Steemit Success Series, as you know!

Your incubator is an inspiration to me - while I plan to fully focus on absolute beginners, as well as in-person workshops in Ireland, seeing what you do for the community inspired me to try and do the same for less experienced users. This is yet another example of one of your excellent initiatives!

Really clever catalyst for engagement! Although I don't see myself making Rhino a priority to learn just now, I'll enjoy the progress as a viewer.

thanks
