Is your ArtworkTitle important?

in art •  6 years ago

I guess that a title always affects those who look at art, giving an idea to the viewer about what the artist had in mind.
Kind of explanation for our analytical left brain while the right brain is in extasy about the colors.
In general one might say that words add value to your work but are useless if the work doesn't deserve it. No use to name your work "The Scream" if there's no emotional relation to this statement in your artwork.

Here is one of my earlier works made with digital tools in 2003. At that time I tried to get a little bit more familiar with Buddhist traditions...therefore the title "VIPASSANA" meaning insight into the true nature of reality.

I think titling certain pieces of art is important, as it can be done to lead, or mislead, the observer down a desired rabbit hole. While I also see the option of leaving it untitled and open to infinite interpretation occasionally desirable, it also makes it much harder to talk about and discuss (unless standing next to it) particularly if you've built up a large collection of untitled work.

Great work with Vipassana too btw!

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:

Do not count on it

Nice one :) No animation this time? For me it's sometimes very difficult to find a title for a picture. I'm a visual person and I want to express emotions, so I'm making pictures instead of talking about

I understand... but if you intend to sell your work a title will help potential buyers to look into your mind...
