Many things go unnoticed in the world around us until its too late, Steemit and Arthur Miller are quite similar in that right. Arthur Miller is perhaps the most prolific playwright in all of American history. His riveting ways of telling stories really shined on the show stage. This can be contributed to his interesting life he had growing up. Miller was born on 1995 in Harlem New York. For a small portion of his childhood life he was well off in terms of money and economic situation, that was until the depression hit and of course everything drastically changed because of that. The business his father once owned and the education job his mother once had were now gone, and because of that they had to move to Flatbush Brooklyn. Miller knew from a very young age that he wanted to become a playwright, so he began to save money by doing peculiar jobs throughout his young life and eventually he saved up enough money to attend the University of Michigan. While going here he decided to write for the student paper and created his first accredited work “No Villain” as a result of this he won the Avery Hopwood Award from his school. After going through college he decided to move back east to become a playwright full time. Not every playwright stars first work starts off with glamorous reviews and great credibility.
To continue, Miller's first Broadway startup had a very ironic ending, however in relation to Steemit its quite the opposite. His 1945 play “The Man Who Had All The Luck” did not even last four performances and was accompanied by terrible reviews. This did not put a dent in his confidence, in fact it inspired him to write an even better play, so he did just that. The 1947 play “All My Sons” took Broadway by storm in a way no one had seen before, running for nearly a whole entire year. This wonderful display of raw talent earned him a Tony Award in the same year. Shortly after he wrote what many consider to be his greatest work. The 1949 play Death of a Salesman grasped the Broadway world once again bringing him home the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and many more. It is rumored that he wrote this play in only 24 hours, but there is still speculation as to whether this is true, an amazing feat nonetheless.
Another amazing feat during his life was his sporadic marriage to Marilyn Monroe, which transpired out of nowhere, he divorced his first wife Mary Slattery which whom he had two kids with, and less than a month later he was remarried again. Their relationship put Miller into a position where he was in the hollywood spotlight, quite literally as all eyes were on him during the remainder of their marriage. He was under the impression that Marilyn would give up her life in order to become a full-time wife. She was going to have none of that though. In 1956 the HUAC did not allow Miller to renew his passport. They asked him to out possible people he knew who might be communists. He instantly declined this. Unfortunately he was cited with Contempt of Congress. Which two years later was removed. Prior to this period of time he created a very bold play with stood up to the rise of McCarthyism at the time. The 1953 play “The Crucible” was a harsh exaggeration of the salem witch trials. Harsh because in reality it was a large allegory to American McCarthyism which is thought of to be one of the main reasons as to why the HUAC did not renew his passport. Steemit encompasses a censorship resistant culture, he would have more than appreciated the collective efforts of Steemit!
Moreover, Miller's playwright career took a halt while they were together, Marilyn Monroe thought that Miller was going to give her an amazing role to showcase her true talent because she no longer desired to be American sex symbol, and she did get good part in Miller's 1961 play “The Misfits” but her old persona was still kept during this play. A year after their divorce Marilyn Monroe died. Her drug addiction is attributed to her death. Once again Miller gets married very quickly. His new partner was Inge Morath which whom he had two kids with. One of them named Daniel, and the other Rebecca, Daniel actually had Down Syndrome but was sent away as a young child. This was not found out until very late in the future. In 1964 he wrote a play called “After the Fall” which is said to use Marilyn Monroe's death as inspiration. He was hit with much backlash because people believed it was too soon to use her death as writing material. He denied all accusations at this time. Fast Forwarding through his life he wrote some very minor plays after this such as Incident at Vichy, Price, The Creation of the World, Other Business, The American Clock, and Broken glass.
The Death of his wife Morath in 2002 did not seem to phase Miller much because shortly after he got into a relationship with Agnes Barley, a short lived engagement followed this up. Before they got married Miller died on February 10th 2005. Funnily enough this happened to be the Anniversary of Death of a Salesman. The cause of death was heart failure, he was battling cancer and pneumonia at the time. Miller will never be forgotten as he has a legacy of amazing works to live on in his name. Quite frankly Broadway would never be the same without him. I believe Arthur Millers ideologies live on in Steemit today!
