As bots and the artificial intelligence evolve thanks to constantly been fed by human inputs, what can be the real impact in our lives?
As an illustrator, I found myself thinking twice when I experienced the MidJourney app on Discord… an AI that can generate Art? Real Art? Pfffffff…..
At first, I thought it would never get any good, but after a few tries and seeing what it can generate for real, my jaw just collapsed in to the floor… and I’m still looking for it…
AI as any bot created learns constantly, learns from us, the humans that create art… so, can it become better than us?… sometimes I’m afraid that science fiction is not that fictional after all and that bots and robots one day might compete with their own creators in many aspects of life itself, and we humans, were the ones that gave “them” all the tools to evolve to something else. Maybe a new form of life…
Leaving behind philosophical scenarios, let’s go back to the bot I experienced… and that at this moment, at every fraction of a second (or much less) is learning to be better than “Leonardo da Vinci”… MidJourney.
All it takes is a few words in a prompt of a chat window and a simple command /imagine to all beginning to happen.
Below is my very first image generated, the bot gives you four variations of what was perceived by your words. “A tall young lady with dark long hair and grey eyes dressed as a medieval lady tribal tattoos on her chest” was my input and the result is what you can see… it's not perfect… since it requires much more details, the more, the better, but it is amazing how a bot can recreate so well what is almost exactly in your mind.
I only can imagine what will come from here… hopefully will never substitute real artist, that should use this bot as a new tool to get to his final work and not as an enemy.
This bot can be indeed used as a reference guide to generate worlds and give life to ideas, that authors of books and games can use to ask then a “flesh and bone” artist to recreate and give a soul. Or not?!
The question stays in the “air” would anyone buy art generated by a bot like the one created by a person? A “real artist”? Or will some people use this AI to skip the process of dealing with an artist and pay him\her by a job that now a bot can do… since all is needed is basically a monthly subscription and a good set of words… and… magic… you can create from sets to characters and even fantastic animals.
It’s scary indeed, as an artist myself, to see how things can change… it can feel like a table cloths pulled out fast… but fortunately some glasses will still stand! Art can take many forms, and maybe this one is just one more to be added to the category of the “digital painting” folder.
Go to the website of MidJourney, so you can see what this bot can do, and believe me is far greater than the simple ones generate by me in this post!
