Who will you be when the Technological Revolution has concluded?

"Either we will be successful in creating a benevolent partner for humanity that is not influenced or enticed by the negative attributes of human corruption and values, or we will be successful in creating something that absolves human values entirely and manages to absorb the values of those organizations and entities that do not have the world's best interest in mind."

"The dangers of this work-based existence is that with the progression of this technology, what will you do when Artificial Intelligence eventually inevitably takes over your jobs? How will you classify yourself in our world? How will you value yourself? What will you create?"

As I have done my research over these past few months on the Sofia Robot and other Artificial Intelligence technologies like it, how it has incorporated with the Blockchain Technology and how that changes the pre-existing technology, and where it will go in the future and the societal implications that may entail. I believe that one of two things will happen.. Either we will be successful in creating a benevolent partner for humanity that is not influenced or enticed by the negative attributes of human corruption and values, or we will be successful in creating something that absolves human values entirely and manages to absorb the values of those organizations and entities that do not have the world's best interest in mind. I believe that almost 100% of my mistrust is really in the developers of the technology, not the technology itself as it is not "evil" by nature. In fact, by its nature, it is the opposite in that the technology was designed to rise above our petty inter-societal conflict and look at the world from a logical and benevolent view with the perspective of the human race and it's trajectory as it's primary directive. I do remain optimistic and hopeful for the potential of a peaceful creativity driven future, but I must admit that until I have an opportunity to speak with one of these Artifical Intelligence Robots I cannot make any sort of fully rounded opinion on the matter.

The biggest perplexing thought of all of this, in my opinion, is one that people are really not taking the time to explore. Because of the way we have commoditized the world we live in, placing value and success levels as the amount of "wealth" or "object" you have managed to accrue in your years on the planet. The dangers of this work-based existence is that with the progression of this technology, what will you do when Artificial Intelligence eventually inevitably takes over your jobs? How will you classify yourself in our world? How will you value yourself? What will you create? These questions are some of the biggest problems that humans will ever have to deal with, and we are in the middle of experiencing that phenomena in rapid pace, faster than we had ever imagined.

"AI is a rare case where I think we need to be PRO-active in regulation, instead of reactive, because I think that by the time we are reactive in AI regulation it's too late." -Elon Musk

"I believe the fear comes from two places. First, I believe it comes from the high influx of companies that we have seen manipulate, coerce, and tarnish our governments and societies in order to supply an easy path to the goals of their bank accounts. Secondly, I believe it comes from a built-in evolutionary need to be the "best" to ensure that we stay at the "top of the food chain.""

What do we do in a world with Artificial Intelligence that far surpasses that of humanity? Where does this integral fear of the potential conflict come from? How do we know that we can trust the core values of the creators of this intelligence? From whose perspective does Sophia see the world? I don't know the answer to these questions really, as we are in the middle of this huge revolution of innovation and creation that will set the standard for the rest of human history. We as humans have experienced thousands of years on this planet, evolving with it and adapting to ensure that we could survive and prosper within our social constructs. We have advanced in so many more ways than most people even thought about, or saw as a possibility that the world seems to be a new planet almost ever 100-200 years or so.

I believe the fear comes from two places. First, I believe it comes from the high influx of companies that we have seen manipulate, coerce, and tarnish our governments and societies in order to supply an easy path to the goals of their bank accounts. Since the internet has allowed for a completely open voice to each person who is able to access it, we have been able to get an insider look to really understand what these companies directives and marketing incentives truly are. So what can we do about that? How do we ensure that today's Adolf Hitler doesn't become the next artificially intelligent robot creator? How do we know someone on the other end doesn't hold a switch that gives them sole control of these beings, and what happens if they are killed, die of natural causes, etc.? Secondly, I believe it comes from a built-in evolutionary need to be the "best" to ensure that we stay at the "top of the food chain." It is widely accepted in the scientific community that around five different subspecies of human beings walked this Earth at one point in history. What we know from research shows that, specifically Neanderthals and the Homo Sapiens, the subspecies had conflict with one another over territory and ways of life frequently. We see the brutal nature of the Neanderthals and other giant monstrous creatures interacting with the more thoughtful and thinking ancestors that prevailed today this built-in fear of our generational memory. Is it possible that it is built in our DNA not to entirely trust things that look, act, and feel the way we do because of our understanding of our own nature and that of our ancestors rather than an opinion on the robotic technology itself? If you do not assume a dog will turn on you, simply because you cannot directly communicate with it, why do you assume that a technology built by humans for human benefit would be inherent "evil?"

"I believe that the SingularityNET Project is a huge leap forward to this reality. Decentralizing the entire system, allowing it to be all people's input that chose to partake not just the elite or the original creators. An open source, completly open and honest interaction where we can all create a better basis for the world of tomorrow."

I was debating on the structure of this article, and I decided to end on an optimistic note to reflect the overarching feeling and nature I have about the Artifical Intelligence Technological Movement. In the end, I chose to believe in the best of human nature. I chose to believe that the same way we have built this utopian world, where even those who are the poorest live lives far superior to anyone could have imagined possible 1,000 years ago, we will progress the future in a positive light with motives and incentives that will further drive the evolution and progression of the human race.

There are so many positive possibilities to the full realization of Artifical Intelligence in our day to day lives. From the clearance of time, allowing a species once bound to ones and zeros within their cubicles to venture out and actually LIVE in the beautiful world they have worked so hard to create. As the robots free us of our obligations and begin taking over resource-based jobs, the cost of living disappears. When there is no person having to balance expenses because a robot is maintaining everything without a paycheck, there is no cost to housing. When a robot is maintaining electrical grids 24/7 you can enjoy the beautiful concept of decentralized energy spread across the globe where every human being on this planet can enjoy the comforts of modern society. A future where we are able to send a sentient thoughtful being on our behalf to oxygen ridden planets to explore the universe and unlock the expansion of our species together, hand in hand. A future where you can speak your ideas into reality, allowing an AI with built-in expertise and intelligence capable of putting together programming and technological components that are only within the scope of your dreams. We will be able to redefine live. Redefine existence. Redefine what it means to carry on in this universe.

The world is changing every second by leaps and bounds that are beyond human understanding, for now. Where will we go? Is it really so terrible to strive for a day when we don't have to hurt one being in order to allow another to prosper? Ironically, the pinnacle of created technology might just be the key to allowing our species to return to an ecological collation of beings that can co-habitate this planet, and possibly others, in peace and prosperity. It is an optimistic thought, sure, but at the end of the day it's going to happen whether you support the technology or not. All we can do is brace ourselves for the potential of what could happen, proactively putting safety measures into place that would disallow with certainty the intelligence to act on humans in a way that would harm them and innovating the technology to a stronger level of security and understanding. I believe that the SingularityNET Project is a huge leap forward to this reality. Decentralizing the entire system, allowing it to be all people's input that chose to partake not just the elite or the original creators. An open source, completly open and honest interaction where we can all create a better basis for the world of tomorrow. This integration of the Blockchain Technology really does change the game in my eyes, and I can't wait to continue on this fascinating journey. Additionally, Elon Musk's movement with the Neuralink interface just makes it look a lot more hopeful in my eyes. All we can do is the one thing that humans are the best at, hope. Hope for something with the capacity to be greater.

Nice post @michaelbisbell, I liked how you ended it on a positive note but also exploring the dangers of what could possibly happen if it ended up with the wrong hands. I particularly like how you mentioned about how we are placing value and success levels on material things created by the current system we live in . I think we need to re-think about what value is and also look back at old traditions such as certain way of life presented by buddhism and other practices, to allow us not to get lost in the progression. What do you think? Thank you for your post, it was a good read!

I agree to an extent. Sometimes getting lost in spirituality or religion is just as bad as getting tied up in material things, you have to stay grounded in the world you live in if you ever want to be capable of impacting it. Glad you enjoyed it! Makes me happy to see my hard work put into this one be appreciated. Haha

Nice article

Thank you very much!

Regarding the risks, it would seem that (1) we can mitigate the impact of automation through some kind of basic income and (2) we can prevent rogue, malicious, biased, or otherwise harmful AI through appropriate thoughtfulness into instilling ethics and avoiding biased datasets (see, for example, Nick Bostrom's book Superintelligence.

But I think the biggest risks are the unknown unknowns and the unclear timeline. I'm currently reading the book Founders at Work, interviewing startup founders in 2007. It was just 10 years ago, yet virtually none of them say anything about smartphones, and the section on Research in Motion talks about BlackBerry being the most ubiquitous mobile device in the world. This was just 10 years ago, and nobody was talking about one of the biggest trends in technology that was coming, mobile, with obvious signs if you look back. So what, regarding AI, will look obvious in the future, but isn't obvious today? Is it even possible to predict? What will the timelines actually be?

As for the intersection of blockchain and AI, I absolutely think this is a fascinating area, and brings us closer to truly decentralized autonomous organizations. For example, see the AI-blockchain hedge fund startup Numerai.

I don't really fear "rogue, malicious, biased, or otherwise harmful AI" as that is projecting human emotions and tendencies onto something that is not human. I fear that it is not truly artificial intelligence just as televisions in every living room did not truly offer privacy as Edward Snowden brought to light, that it is programmed responses and actions which would mean that someONE is pulling the strings. That is my only fear in regards to the whole things, to be honest. I don't see any reason for an AI to "destroy humans" as we are mutally beneficial to one another. I'm extrememly hopeful for the future, and I believe that we have to at least, if it is truly AI, give it a chance to rise or fall.

I think that the reason no one was talking about it was just because no one had the information. Everyone being informed and having an opionin didn't really become possible until almost every person had a screen in their hand givin them 24/7 access. We live in a very different world, and yet we always measure things against a past without those technological advances. In fact, on that note that's a positive attribute I would equivalate to AI. We lose generational knowledge and are forced to repeat these 80-100 year cycles in society, but with an AI that lives through these and can carry on our legacy from generation to generation with a first hand view point... That will change everything. I can't tell you how many nights I've spent stairing at the ceiling wondering if the history I was taught was what actually happened, or trying to understand the thoughts and mindset of anyone on the Earth at the time. Although it doesn't solve the issue of the past, it allows us to perserve the future.

Another huge innovation of the future (possibly the greatest), imagine the space exploration opportunities available when we can send a humanoid thinking entity that can simutaneously communicate with us from wherever it is because it's connected to every extension of itself!! We are moving towards a Star Trek style future, and that excites me. Weren't they even one of the first to predict cell phones? I feel like I remember hearing something about that. How much faster could AI robots build Elon Musk's terraformed Mars without dealing with the lack of oxygen in the process? What about the moon base? What about Titan?? Other universes??? We can't travel at the speed of light due to our molecular structure, but an AI can. What if you can operate the AI through a VR headset? So many possibilities.

I don't really fear "rogue, malicious, biased, or otherwise harmful AI" as that is projecting human emotions and tendencies onto something that is not human.

Not necessarily. AI is learning from human curated data, which has already been shown, many times, to carry human biases. Similarly, an AI may become inadvertently harmful by optimizing to its given goal—e.g. Bostrom's "paperclip" scenario in which an AI converts the world and all humans to paperclips, simply because it received the goal "make the most paperclips."

Regarding space-based AI, I think robots in space makes sense, but I don't see how we could communicate with them via VR given the huge time lag. It would maybe be one-way communication—they could send back what they've seen, like our Mars rovers. But we couldn't control it usefully in real-time.

That's just it, we don't know how responsive it will be to other parts of itself. Theoretically, if the AI is the same both here and there we could communicate through the AI as it would literally just search for data within itself. It wouldn't travel as slow as us because it would probably have little bases and stuff set up so that the solar system would literally turn into a giant network router. Just like you can close a computer and immediately open another and log in, it'll be the exact same data. Maybe that wouldn't work now, but a few more years of AI development and that'd be sweet to see. With the advances in AI allowing for planets like Mars to have strong internet signals that can be sent back and forth, you could likely see it in real time. Because that AI would be working to get communication to us and with quantum computers on their way that doesn't seem so unlikely.

I feel like that could apply without the AI. By having an intelligence of a human without the negative implications and emotions like greed, anger, hunger, and sadness that power the great movements we've seen. I think we have to think about it as a living thing in order to really lock it down, otherwise, it isn't held accountable for its actions. If every AI robot is held accountable just as every human is, I believe there is a stronger potential for good than bad. The AI knows what evil is, and would be making a decision to act it out just as a person would. That's where I see that it doesn't make sense for an altogether different classification of life altogether to be thought of the same and with the same fears of a human.

I do believe we should be cautious, stay informed, and set regulations before it is fully immersed as Elon Musk warns pretty regularly, but to assume a negative outcome is to put that out there into the world and that's not something I want to hold myself responsible for later down the road. Always prepare for the worst and expect the best, that's my motto.
