20 Year Anniversary Sigil & Intuitive Drawing, Encaustic Experiment #6c

Here's something amazing I just learned about encaustic! The oil paint merges with the wax and dries immediately! Also, you can put the oil paint on the wax, and then use the heat gun to make it make incredible weird designs that you weren't expecting - as in this piece - I just decided to add paint to the background because I could not stand how the angel was separate from the background so I had to forfeit (I thought) the back ground color - but not so - because once I applied the heat gun, some of the background color came back in... it's like nothing I have ever done before...

Thank you!!

fantastic art boss.

Thank you!!

Very cool! I never heard of mixing wax with paint. Great painting! The reason I use acrylics is because they dry quickly and they clean with water.

Thank you!! great to hear from u- I use oils because I am so absent minded that I leave the brushes unwashed in the paint for days...lol- cleanup w citrisolv- but now it’s a whole different game- I cannot believe the painting is dry!!! Wow-

It's exciting when things like that happen! I can feel your motivated vibe. I love how you are enjoying this new medium and sharing your pleasure with us :)

Sorry, Bear with my stupid question, I'm not a visual artist! I was wondering what the effect was if the wax. Is it the 'smearing' effect?

hey that's a great question - the wax is really a way to glue everything together. it creates a cohesive look and also a dreamy quality. The smeariness comes from the application of the heat gun onto the wax with the oil pastel - when the wax melts under the heat with the oil pastel or paint it all moves around in a smeary or marbelistic way - its totally fun and you would not need to be a visual artist to get some great effects!!!

Thanks for the answer, it's always interesting to learn the tricks of another profession.

I guess the flame of the heart gun would need to be well managed to avoid disaster! Thanks for sharing the work, it looks great!

the heat gun is not a torch - it is super hot but it's not dangerous if you use common sense
