This is a detail of the scale model of a mural that I designed for the cafeteria of a high school (the one I went to as an adolescent) in Illinois (USA). It was odd to walk down the halls of the old building so many years later. It looked like the same place I had known, but did not feel like it.
The building is a lovely old limestone structure that looks like a castle. It has plenty of carved wooden decorations and marble floors.
The young people in the mural are shown performing activities that are taught in this high school. They are proud of their technical programs. In the first picture in this post, a boy is learning soldering. Here is a future nurse:

On his sweatshirt is a steelman, the school's symbol.
Although I usually paint murals directly, this one came about differently. I made the scale model and it was digitally reproduced on large panels and installed in the cafeteria. The murals have a decorative purpose, but they are also intended to muffle the sound in the locale.

did you keep the scale model? That is great doing it that way - I thought of that often. At one time I proposed this by using slides on which I created abstract images with color ink and all kinds of stuff in it (basically pocket lint, feathers, scraps of plastic etc). Blown up big would have been epic, but they didn't go for it (University). I don't even have a photo of it anymore, since I lost a lot of files, but it was basically like a Max Ernst Decalcomania created on a glass slide.

The scale model was an actual painting in acrylic. I believe the school kept them. (There are 2 murals.) The scanning process was quite involved in order to get a high definition image big enough to cover the sound panels in the cafeteria. We had to have the file made and printed by specialists.

Amazing what can be done these days. I have a good company here in Vienna that did a great job on a large drawing of mine. You can zoom in and see the finest detail very sharp, down to the structure of the paper. Almost like looking through a microscope.
