Portraits in oil

In my last post, I mentioned how interesting hands can be and how they can describe a person as much as a facial expression. In this post, I would like to show a few portraits I have done which can be found in some of my paintings.

I always try to emphasize lighting in my portraits, because I feel it makes them appear that much more real, especially if the light comes from the side. I like to paint people who are unaware they are being watched, at a moment they think they are alone and totally interiorized.

I love portraiture because it gives us the possibility to freeze, in time, in a very personal way, a moment in a person's life.

Here are a few examples:

It seems a thing to wonder on,
As though mine image in the glass
Should tarry when myself am gone.
I gaze until she seems to stir,—
Until mine eyes almost aver...

Truly exceptional skills for making portraits. Im just curios how do you choose your subjects? I only made few portraits but your paintings are really wonderful, i like rhe transparent effects like a spiritual ripple.

Thank you @errymil. I have been working on the India theme for some time now. Choosing a subject has allowed me to connect with an audience of India lovers. As far as the models are concerned, I try to find people who are not aware they are being observed, in a state of total authenticity. I do my compositions in photoshop and spend quite a bit of time on them before picking up a paintbrush. That way I have explored many possibilities before deciding on one. These paintings take a long time to do; luckily that's okay because I enjoy the stages.

Oic thats a very helpful tip. I loved painting landscapes and use my own photo to create it. Not im inspired to do portraits. And thays a good way to choose a subject. So do you also take photos of them as well. That would be a challenge to take a photo wothout them knowing specially if your using a big camera.

Yes the hardest part is getting a usable photo. Luckily I have friends who are excellent photographers who give me their photos to use. I always look for lighting that shows form as well as expression - very hard to find.

Hmm you gave me a good idea, my sister love photography. I could check her photos and use it, but she love landscapes, maybe i can find some portrait and try oit your tips. Thanks you

I try to always get the best documents possible as in great part, they determine the quality of the outcome.
