There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in every human being, and these chromosomes are building blocks that carry the genetic heritage of our bodies. Some people come up with a "genetic difference" called "Trizomi 21" because of an extra chromosome in the 21st chromosome pair. In other words, "Down Syndrome".

In the context of A + A-Down syndrome, various activities are organized in order to raise awareness in society. Following the United Nations' decision on November 10, 2011 and the 21st of March as the official World Down Syndrome Day, various events around the world have helped to further this genetic diversity. What is Down Syndrome?

In its simplest definition, Down Syndrome means that your child has an extra chromosome, 47 chromosomes, instead of 46 cells in the body. Of the chromosomes that make up the human body, 23 are from the mother and 23 are from the father. There are 3 chromosomes in the Down Syndrome, not 2. As a result, the total number of chromosomes is not 46 but 47.

Down Syndrome in itself

Trisomy 21: All cells have an extra 21st chromosome. 94% of people with Down's syndrome are in this group.

Translocation: Extra 21th chromosome is linked to another chromosome. 4% of people with Down's syndrome are in this group.

Mosaic: Some of the cells have an extra 21. Chromosome. 2% of people with Down's syndrome are in this group.

Can Down's Syndrome be detected at birth?

Down Syndrome can be detected by prenatal diagnostic methods. However, these tests carry specific risks within themselves. In Down syndromes, there is plenty of skin on the scalpel. But it is not a definite method. Triple Screening is done by taking from mother's blood and risk calculation is done. However, it can identify 60% and jump 40%. But it should not be forgotten that each test will not give you 100% accuracy.

Physical properties of Down syndromes

Some physical properties seen in Down syndromes; The small eyes, short nose, short fingers, curly fingers, thick nape, the only line in the palm, the toe is more open than the other fingers. All or a few of these features can be seen. Babies with Down Syndrome grow slower than their peers with exceptions. His mental development is coming back. This retardation appears to be more pronounced as the age grows, but children with Down Syndrome also have many successes and can make meaningful lives in community life with appropriate education programs. A regular and disciplined education program and plenty of time again are the most important factors. Individuals with Down Syndrome are generally shorter than their peers and may experience weight problems later on if they do not acquire proper eating habits due to the slow working of their metabolism.
