Steem has made some insane moves at the beginning of this year.
Many expected it to and knew that Steem usually always lagged behind a bit when alts were moving up, either due to the nature of how Steem is aquired or the continuous printing of new tokens which many others don't have. It doesn't seem to have cared too much about it though and taken it's place with a quick and high uptrend like many others.
This chart shows the graph of steem 1 year back from today.
2 months ago I made this quick prediction of the chart of how I thought Steem would go and I'm surprised it looks pretty much like it now in the graph. The post can be found here.
Although I expect some correction to follow soon and Bitcoin probably making more moves upwards (which surprisingly doesn't seem to have affected all too many altcoins, maybe people are just using BTC as a gateway to alts now considering its dominance hasn't moved much) but in the long run I do believe Steem will continue to climb. Whether the latest moves have been due to the new additions to the network coming, like Communities and SMT's or if it's just a reflection of the activity and traffic is hard to tell, could probably be a little of both.

I personally see Steemit as more of a "test net" than anything.. the steem network is truly amazing doesnt need steemit at all to be honest, it is just needs a test platform to show what it can do and to figure some things out.. steemit wont ever be why steem goes to the moon, it will be because of the incredibly fast transactions on a huge network and the capability to carry other smt's.. as much as i love steemit, i personally dont ever think it will carry the steem network.. steem will eventually be kinda like an etherium platform, carrying other smt coins on its network..

I dont know if compitition would be the right idea. If the value of an smt on steem would rise that would help the steem network, not just the smt itself.
Hypothetically Steemit could fail and the steem network would be just fine. Appics is just one of the smt's i was talking about. There will be many more tokens to come, which will make this platform very strong.

But since this platform will host so many other good smt's/tokens that means it will have a lot of value. And since its (micro) transactions are so incredibly fast and basically free, it will attract other companies to build on this networt, that's what will bring the real value to steem.
People dont realize how important speed is when dealing with cryptos, i personally even hate waiting for even litecoin transfers cuz they are so damn slow, and screw bitcoin it gives me anxiety waiting on that transfer plus the fees are ridiculous!
We cant have cryptos as the future with lagging transfers and huge fees.. speed and (basically) no fees will win in the end.

A lot depends on HF20. Signups should be much simpler and faster. So we might in theory have a massive increase in membership. That alone would point to a significantly higher demand for Steem.
But add in the widespread embrace of SMT’s by some big players?

Well, the masses should be into crypto's at around 7% somewhere near 2020ish. That's 7% of the world population so what happens when the masses turns into 10% or 25% and beyond? In my mind, the one's in now if this is true are set up for success. I think we may end 2018 somewhere in the range of US$ 30-40, with a bigger jump possibly even towards US$ 200 in 2019. Obviously a lot of that will depend on the quality of the very first SMTs, and also their popularity.
Eventually, if the SMT platform picks on, STEEM will become a token in limited supply which will be needed by the largest SMTs and continue to grow. Until then newer projects such as also SteemHunt will continue to make the steem ecosystem more mainstream and spread wealth.

Everyone can start a SMT but there’s requirements, especially if you want to issue your own tokens. SMTs need to issue against held (not leased) STEEM.
Don’t focus too much on Appics. They’re an advertising/marketing agency. They made that obvious in their talk at SteemFest: they have years of existing relationships with clients. That was their main asset. Or the only thing she could reply when asked about Steepshot.

It’s early days. Steepshot is a side project (free time project) of some developers, in a very early alpha. Appics for now is merely marketing. Nobody knows if it will even launch. Or how good it will be.

I have just arrived in this community and am still learning about all this. It's certainly a very interesting place to be part of and I'm really looking forwards to seeing where all this is going. Correct me at any point if I'm wrong, but I'd compare this place to Reddit but powered by a decentralized system and with Karma that is actually worth something. What keeps me riddled is how stable the value can get with a constant flow of more currency. But yeah as I said I'm totally new with all this and know next to nothing, I'll try to educate myself over the next few days.

The biggest reason to why I like Steem is HOW its earned. Someone that is really rich can't just buy their way through the market or ICO. Of course you can buy Steem low and sell high, but the only way of getting is naturally is hard work through building a reputation through quality content.
As for my predictions for where the price goes...that I'm not sure. Obviously if the amount of Steem volume keeps going up that will prevent from it going RIDICULOUSLY high, but I still think it has a lot of potential to go higher than it is now...

I have a feeling we will be hovering around the $100 mark at the beginning of next year, but it will depend on how well the next hardfork is in my opinion. I believe we can reach very high if we are able to onboard new users quick, cheap and easy after the hardfork :)

Keeping the trend in mind, the whole concept of STEEM really helps it to stay stable with it's price. By 2019, I think with more and more people buying it off the market, it should be somewhere around $40 to $50. Fingers crossed!

Honestly, I feel like it's pretty possible for it to hit $15-30 by the time we get to next new years. Maybe that's just me being optimistic in such a small time frame, but the growth we've seen since I joined last January has been staggering. Watching Steem go from $0.13 up to $6.20 has been exciting over the past year, and I really do hope we see another big surge at some point by 2019. It seems entirely possible considering all of the booming we've seen going on in alt coins over the past month or two. So long as the volume of STEEM doesn't go up a giant amount then I can say there's a pretty good shot we'll hit at least $15.
