It’s hard to imagine but there are hikers even in the Gobi Desert. And how great it is! One of them is said to have often stopped on a giant rock to have his lunch. He had been curious as to the type of rock, which had crystals in it. Therefore, in 2000, the man decided to break some pieces of the rock off – and so the Fukong meteorite got discovered. Ever since it has often been hailed as one of the greatest meteorite discoveries of the 21st century.
The meteorite happened to be a Pallasite, an extremely rare type of meteorite – less than 1 % of all meteorites – that contains silicate crystals, primary peridot (olivine), distinguishable by its greenish hue.
The Fukang Meteorite is thought to have been formed at the birth of the solar system approximately 4.5 billion years ago, when the olivine fragments from its mantle mixed with the molten metal from its core upon impact on earth.
Heaven it’s not the only place where peridot can be born, but even on Earth it is born of fire. Only peridot and diamonds are formed deep in the mantle, and get to the surface as part of the lava and magma spewed forth from volcanic eruptions.
In Hawaiian mythology, peridots are regarded to be goddess Pele’s tears. Pele was the goddess of fire, lightening and volcanoes.
Peridots’ color can be described as yellow–green, green with a golden tone, olive or bottle green, deep chartreuse, or simply a brilliant light green. The proportion of iron present causes the shade and depth of the green; the deeper the green, the smaller the amount of iron present. The richness of its color can be exceptional and is completely natural.
Because of its rarity, peridot is not usually seen in its deeper pure green color.
The peridots of Serendib jewels exhibit this rich, emerald–like green. The peridot of our “Nugget of Hope” necklace and all the peridot members of the “Cheerful Fellows” necklace–family can be mistaken with emerald.
Pliny wrote that Peridot is dull during daylight hours but will glow like a hot coal by night. Serendib Peridots glow during the day as well. But the transformation that happens at night can only be watched by its happy owner.
Just as the energetic transformation that is promoted by this stone of spring and sunlight. It creates an atmosphere of gentle joy, refilling you with fresh energies of renewal. There is order and structure around Peridot, and it helps you express your feelings frankly, with trust in your heart. This way, plus evoking fidelity, clarity and joy the gem improves cooperation of all kind. Peridot nurtures, gives a sense of being 'held in light', and also of inner flow, helping us to feel calm, still and optimistic.
