Our grandchildren might gain a fortune with the moonstone jewelry that is still available for us. Moonstone comes from the mineral family feldspar, which is one of the most plentiful in the world, however fine gem quality moonstone is scarce and is becoming more and more scarce as time goes on. Earth’s deposits seem to run out of it. No wonder why: throughout the ages, moonstone has been kept in a very high esteem by many cultures and so has an abundant folklore.

In India during the earliest traditions, the gem was said to have been embedded in the forehead of Ganesh, the four-handed god of the moon, since the beginning of time. It was written in Hindu mythology that moonstone is made from moonbeams, thus its luster. The magnificent gem is never displayed outside for sale unless placed on a yellow cloth, as yellow is a sacred color.

Ancient Romans and Greeks believed moonstone was formed from solidified beams of moonlight. They also held that the Roman goddess Diana, goddess of the moon, could be seen within the stone, and that it would bestow love, wisdom and good fortune upon those who possessed it. Moonstone was used in Roman jewelry since the year 100 AD and was a most popular jewelry choice, being such a magical looking stone, and having such benefits for its wearer.

Ian Asian myth says that blue moonstones are washed up by the ocean tides every twenty–one years. Another claims that moonstone will lose its pretty shine and sheen if the owner of the stone keeps a lot of anger pent up inside.

As soon as we have a look at moonstone, we understand this connection: its whitish, gray–white, silvery–white, or milky white color with a soft blue shimmer always has a silky light, like the moon. It rates a 6 – 6.5 on the hardness scale. It is a relatively soft stone but given the proper care, it can last a long time.

Moonstone is supposed to increase sensitivity and open up our consciousness to our inner world. It also has a calming, soothing radiation thanks to its cool color.
