NEW Theme! Abandoned Shit Weekly Contest - №.9 - 'Graveyards!' #aswcontest

ASWGraveyards00a.jpg

Wow, what a week of Abandoned Shit it was! That has been one of my favorite weeks to look through entires yet. It was great seeing brand news entries come in from all around the world. Thanks to everyone who put the legwork in and entered their submissions. I strongly recommend clicking the #aswcontest tag and looking at them all, if you haven't yet!
Also, you'll note a reduction in the prize pool. I've been unable to secure any type of sponsorship, so payouts need to be a bit less if I'm too keep doing this contest each and every week. Now then, it's time for a new theme. But first:

Guest Judge: @creepycrazylife!

Funny story about @creepycrazylife. He's from my own hometown... but we met here on Steemit! He's a super talented photographer that specializes in the strange, morbid, macabre, and occult. Seriously, take a look at his blog. So many fantastic posts, from the catacombs of Paris, to numerous film locations of iconic horror films (like the famous staircase from The Exorcist, in the photo above). He's the perfect candidate to judge this week's theme!

The Contest:

This is NOT a photography contest.  The subject matter is what's being judged with the Abandoned Shit Weekly contest, not one's skills with a camera.  Honestly, I just want to see some cool abandoned shit.  lol  HOWEVER, as with any photograph, the "wow factor" can certainly be enhanced with a technically sound execution.  Simply put, winners won't be chosen strictly on artistry.

The Prizes:

1st Place = 10.000 SBD
2nd Place = 5.000 SBD
3rd Place = 2.500 SBD

The Theme:

This week's theme = GRAVEYARDS! Photos must be of ABANDONED graveyards/cemeteries. Notice the ABANDONED is in caps. We're not looking for just normal cemetery pictures. We're looking for ones that are rather dilapidated. Mausoleums, tombs, crypts, and catacombs will also be accepted. A place where the remains of dead people are kept. This week has the potential to be very creepy! I can't wait to see the entries! Please be respectful of these locations though.

The Rules:

Rule #1 = Your abandoned shit photo must be posted using the tag #aswcontest for one of your tags.  This is crucial so that your entry can be seen/found!

Rule #2 = Your photo must be taken by YOU. If you take an imagine from the internet and use it as your entry into this contest, you will be disqualified and I will flag you.

Rule #3 = Only ONE entry per user, per week. Save some content for future contests! Several photos of the same abandoned object/location within your post is okay.

Rule #4 = Tell us what we're looking at!  You don't have to write a novel, but let us know what the picture is of, and where you found it.  That's the most interesting part! Equipment and camera settings can be included at your discretion, but is not necessary.

Rule #5 = Stick to the weekly theme!.

The Time:

When = New ASW contests will start on TUESDAYS and will end at 11:58pm EST on SUNDAY.  Winners will be announced on Monday with awards distributed then as well. I figure it's a good way to start the week!

The HELP:

HELP! - I'd really like this contest to become an established, weekly feature.  Resteeming the official contest announcement post here would be a huge help in getting the word out, though you do not HAVE to in order to participate in the contest.  I'm just asking as a favor.  Also, just mentioning the contest in/on your entry post would help a lot!

That's it!  Let's see some cool abandoned stuff! Good Luck!

^^^Here's the photo used for the contest logo above. The photo was taken in Sitka, Alaska and was a graveyard in the middle of the woods from back when Russia owned the place. Most of the grave's epitaphs were in Russian. Forgive the photo quality, as it was taken with an iPhone 4s quiet a few years ago.

Spooky outlook over a very old graveyard at an abandoned medieval Augustinian Prior’s Tower (middle of the frame), known as Black Castle, that was built in 1210. The newer medieval tower house, or belfry tower, to the right of frame dates from 1525 and is sometimes referred to as the White Castle. In front of the belfry tower is the abandoned remains of the ‘Lady's Chapel’. A Lady chapel or lady chapel is a traditional British term for a Christian chapel dedicated to ‘Our Lady’, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Inistioge, County Kilkenny, Ireland. Click on the photo to enlarge

Hi, this is my entry

The Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa, Italy, famous for its monumental sculpture. Covering an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe.(Wikipedia)

Here is my entry for this cool contest :-)

Hello and thanks to @customnature for the contest!

These photos are from a very old graveyard in North Andover, Massachusetts with some headstones dating back to the late 1600's. Several of the founders of the town are buried here. Interested fact; even more accused witches were put to death here than in nearby Salem. Check out Andover Witch Trials.

Thanks for the info. I'll be adding this cemetery to my list when I go up there in 2 weeks

There are many more

Wow, what are those? Is that first one a tomb or something?

This, cotton from the old railway factory. The parts were kept here.
I would very much like to compete with it. When will be possible ... sir?

Not this week. The theme this week is graveyards/cemeteries.

I think it's an underground bunker. At least, that's what it looks like to me.

"Abandoned Graveyard but still beautiful"

The World is temporary, the grave is permanent.
Is there such thing as permanent in this temporary world?

This grave is very old. it's almost 100-year old.

Philadelphia's Mount Moriah Cemetery has been formally shut and deserted since 2011, its 380 sections of land now congested, the more than 85,000 graves devoured by an infringing woodland. Consolidated in 1855, it was once among the most world class of the Victorian graveyards. Presently you're fortunate on the off chance that you can discover a relative's grave without rubbing against harm ivy.

There's no reason to be the richest man in the cemetery. You can't do any business from there.

So cool! Thanks for your entry.

This is a very old graveyard, it was on the garden of a old church, the graves where 100+ , it was in England and they have a historical value ,so the churches look very old :)

El Cuadrado Cemetery is a private administration cemetery located on Avenida Las Delicias in the city of Maracaibo, capital of Zulia State, west of the South American country of Venezuela. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in the town being established on November 12, 1879, with the name "New Cemetery" which would later be changed to El Cuadrado due to its particular shape.

It has an approximate area of 2 hectares, and in 2003 it was declared a Historical Heritage of the city, due to the number of local historical figures buried there and its architecture. Among the personalities buried in the place are Eduardo López Rivas, Humberto Fernández-Morán, Eduardo López Bustamante, Joaquín Esteva Parra, General Eduardo Pérez Fabelo, the poet Udón Pérez, Dr. Jesús Enrique Lossada, Antonio José Urquinaona, Manuel Dagnino and Francisco Ochoa.

Awesome! Thanks for entering the contest!

My entry to #aswcontest graveyards contest No-9 Thank you for running such a awesome contest.

https://steemit.com/aswcontest/@bigsambucca/abandoned-shit-weekly-contest-no-9-graveyards

Thanks for entering! I'm glad you like the contest concept.

Oh wow. Is there only two graves there? Fascinating.

Yeah it is only the two graves. It is kind of creepy.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Wow, that is creepy, for sure!

Excellent write up, @karen12

Ah! Just last week I posted a blog on a beautiful abandoned graveyard in Scotland - I should have known better and waited with that post! I did add the #aswcontest tag just now and right before payout, but I don't expect you to consider it as a contender since I did not post the pictures after you opened the contest. But I thought some people here might like the post anyway, especially @creepycrazylife with his love for the macabre :D

You can read the post if you like my teaser image :-)

(I'll now have to break my head to see if I actually visited more abandoned graveyards, I have more series on graveyards but as far as I know they were all still in use and/or opened for public.)

That post would be okay with me! BUT, it seems like steemit won't show posts per tag after the 7 day payout time. Soooo by the time Monday comes for judging, your post may not show up with all of the other entries. I'd just pick a favorite photo of the bunch and enter it again... if it were me. Just explain it's for the contest!

Ahhh thanks for the feedback and tip! I'll consider that indeed :D

Love your photo! Too bad it can't be chosen as the winner! Here is my entry.
https://steemit.com/aswcontest/@melinda010100/abandoned-shit-weekly-contest-68a2b45132d99

Thanks @melinda010100! It's probably the coolest cemetery I've ever been to. There are one or two close runners up though. Great entry!

Ooo good one!

I've been planning to go to the cemetery but not so soon 😜. The snow has just melted, I will be stepping in mud, again, but I won't miss this 😉

Ha! 😂

Here's my entry for this week. It's not what I wanted, but this is the best I can do this week. https://steemit.com/aswcontest/@erikah/graveyard-in-hameln-for-abandoned-shit-weekly-contest-9-graveyards-hameln

Cool. I have something for this. I will post later today!

Seriously cant wait to see some of these!

I love this topic ... I will try to take some good pictures that cover the expectations ...

Can't wait to see them!

Research time. Need to find an abandoned graveyard around here. Can't even come close to picturing one as any that are here are still active or at least maintained.

Something to consider, maybe instead of straight SBD prizes use a 2 weeks delegation of SP for prizes. Not sure if that is better or worse for your situation, just a thought. Seriously even 75SP extra could help someone that is just getting going.

Side note, you might be able to get a delegation from a whale for sponsorship easier then straight SBD.

A delegation would help me get more curation rewards, right? You mean that instead of a direct SBD donation? Also, do most people contact them directly to do so? I don't really love doing that. :-/

I think that contacting direct unless you know them isn't the best idea.

My thought was if you got say a 5000SP donated delegation you could offer delegations for prizes vs using SBD. It wouldn't be about using the SP for your benefit, but instead to save some SBD. Or a mix of SBD and delegated SP. You could hypothetically delegate up to the amount you currently have if someone then delegated that much to you without it costing you anything.

You could use a 2 or even 4 week delegation to help the contest winners. There is the 1 week cool down so 4 weeks with less total SP would maybe be better to give out.

If you know any whales that like what you are doing they are the ones I would approach on discord or other place outside of steemit so they can talk privately.

Some interesting ideas here. I'm gonna look into it. Thanks!

whether the image should use a date written on paper, like a contest last week

No, you don't need to this time.

Nice shoot!

I dropped your post in our contest promo box in our discord chat room, I also resteemed your post. I am with a group helping new users get a leg up, so hopefully some will stop by and visit your contest.

Cool graveyards!like this contest

Wow. There are a lot of entries so far. Kind of sad , but also poetic in a way.

Sad indeed! But, if nothing else, these otherwise forgotten graves are being acknowledged one more time.

primera vez que voy a participar muy bueno felicitaciones...sigo a @customnature

me sumo al retoo

This isn't a great photo but I have to go with this one as it has the best story attached to it. We had been out all day with our family, having some random family adventures and I suggested, lets drop into the cemetery on the way home. This is the cemetery at Toowong in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. It's a really big cemetery, it was Brisbane's main cemetery once. It was opened in 1875 but some burials had taken place from 1871. So it's a really old cemetery too! it's built on a fairly good sized hill and it gets amazing city views, so it's nice to walk around there and appreciate the city. We just wandered through, reading some of the stones and of course because it was at night, it was dark and felt a little spookier maybe. I was taking photos... for you know... just in case. I thought it would be cool if something explainable showed up.

So all was good... UNTIL... my husband decides to stand on this grave site so he could read the stones. Now I don't go near them... I certainly won't walk over one, even if it is a lawn plot. I always make sure I go around. Not him... he didn't think anything of it. Well next thing he fell through!!! Like look at this thing... nothing about it looks sturdy. Not that I would even if it did, I would just NEVER do that. Well... didn't he get the fright of his life!! He does believe in the after life... spirits and everything that goes along with that, so he was really freaked out!! Traumatised even! It freaked him out for ages afterwards and he'd never contimplate ever going back again. Just so you know... he didn't just fall a little... it was a lot, he fell through up to his shins!

This photo was taken before he fell through, there was no photo taking opportunities after that happened, he couldn't get out of there quick enough!
