Dukes and Duchesses of the Deserted!

The Theme:

This week's theme = OVERGROWTH! The photos must have a focus on plant-life taking over the abandoned subject. You all know I'm a nature enthusiast. I'd like to see some images where nature is really taking something back. The abandoned object can be a building, vehicle, product, whatever... the important part is that weeds, vines, moss, ivy, trees, etc are growing on/over/through it. This theme is a bit more specific. Possibly the most changing ASW Contest yet?!

My Thoughts:
I think this week has been my personal favorite yet. I loved the "overgrowth" theme as well as the tons of great entires. I believe there was around 75 entires all together. To be honest, as I write this part of the post, I still am undecided. OK! Decisions have been made. Now then, lets get to this week's winners:

1st Place Winner - 20 SBD: @ablaze

A location that is in the top 5 of my travel bucket list. The Ta Prohm temple in Cambodia. @ablaze takes us there with his entry! The strangler fig roots taking over the centuries old temple is absolutely incredible. Be sure to check his entry out. Thanks for this post, sir!
From the author: "After the fall of the Khmer Empire around 1430, the temple of Ta Prohm and many others were abandoned and neglected for centuries. This temple in particular seemed to become one with nature and the trees have become part of the temple today."

2nd Place Winner - 10 SBD: @donvee

Second Place goes to crusty-old-car guy and "vehicle" week judge @donvee. I can't believe the plant growth on this old (and rare) VW truck he found. I've never seen so much moss growth on a metal object. Its like they had to have had the bed of the trucked filled with soil or something when it was abandoned. I kinda want to stretch out and relax on it... looks cozy!
From the author: " There's a place I used to buy parts from that had a miniature VW graveyard of sorts behind their shop. While I was back there grabbing a few parts for my dune buggy, I clicked a few pics of some of the more interesting finds hidden among the foliage."

3rd Place Winner - 5 SBD: @rameelkarim

When it comes to "overgrowth", this entry by @rameelkarim pretty much jumps out and hits ya right between the eyes. Even from the the little thumbnail, you can tell nature is kicking some serious ass somewhere. Boy, these building will be disappeared in a few more years by the looks of it!
From the author: *"This house is covered with plants. it looks so awesome. the owner of this house is refused to sell this house. many people offer a blank cheque to the owner of this house. Gardner give water to plants every day because of https://steemit.com/aswcontest/@rameelkarim/abandoned-shit-weekly-contest-week-5-entry-overgrowth

Honorable Mentions - 1 SBD each:

@soyrosa

"Fort de la Chartreuse in Luik / Liège was built in 1817 by the Dutch, but was then taken over by Belgian people in 1830. Because of its strategic location (close to multiple country borders) the building played an important role in the second World War. It has been used by German soldiers as a prison. In the end it was abandoned, since 1980."

@leemlaframboise

"This old cedar strip canoe was found on our cabin lot that we had purchased 3 years ago, along with the building and many other items that were left abandoned for over 20 years."

@minatubo

"The SS Thistlegorm was a British armed Merchant Navy ship built in 1940 by Joseph Thompson & Son in Sunderland, England. She was sunk on 6 October 1941 near Ras Muhammad in the Red Sea and is now a well known diving site."

@bil.prag

"So this is a photo story of an Abandoned water pump near Apatin, Serbia. I visited a friend of mine who is originally from Apatin and now lives in Canada. Apatin is located on the Danube river so we were just walking through nature and he wanted to show me a place where they played when they were kids."

@tillygerbi

"A couple of years ago I was really surprised to learn that there’s an abandoned train station and railway track in Highgate, London. My mind couldn’t really process how that could go unnoticed"

FINAL THOUGHTS
This was a super difficult week to pick winners for. There were some other entires that I liked a LOT, but I tried to keep the "overgrowth" theme in mind. I think the chosen winners' photos really embody that. Again, if you didn't win... don't be discouraged. There will be a lot of these contests with lots of different themes!

Abandoned Shit Weekly Contest - №. 6 will be announced tomorrow (Tuesday) and look for the official contest post to see what the week's theme will be! I'm so excited and I hope you all join in, once again! Now, I'm off to distribute payouts!

Wow!! What a fantastic surprise to wake up to. I'm honoured to take top spot in your wonderful contest @customnature Thank you so much. That 20SBD is such a boost to this little minnow. Congrats to all the other prize winners and all the entrants. There really were so many amazing photographs and stories.. Such natural beauty in various states of abandonment

Congrats @ablaze! Cool photo and writeup! I only discovered the contest last night, and like you, I thought of the Ta Prohm temple immediately when I read "overgrowth" , but it's passed the deadline for entries, so I didn't submit my photo which is from the same angle as yours. What a coincidence! =) Now waiting for the next theme.

No way, that's a great coincidence @itchyfeetdonica It is such an amazing place, isn't it.. I'm really looking forward to the next contest as well. I will keep an eye out for your entry :)

Congrats for winner 👍
Specially congrats for my brother @ rameelkareem 💜
Party head 😂😂

I found the post of @axeman and as a photographer myself, I'm in love with the photos in this post! I know you say these contests are not about photography per se, but I think some people here might appreciate his post anyway: https://steemit.com/photofeed/@axeman/overgrowth-abandoned-city-of-skrunda :-)

Cheers and thanks for creating this fun contest, really gives me a chance to go through my photo archives and look back at some fun urban exploration sessions I've done in the past :-)

And of course thanks for the honourable mention!

Dear @customnature.

Only through this very competition I was reminded of the abandoned, monumental bunker I wrote about for my entry to this competition. And only through my participation to this competition I was able to "win" a gigantic @curie mass upvote. Only you made this possible for me.

Congratulation to all the winners, and thank you for your wonderful photos as well!
