I was having a discussion with a Catholic person the other day, and this person took issue with my characterization of god's miracles as "magic". She told me that magic was satan's domain and god only worked miracles, and to prove it she gave me the official Catholic definition of magic. It was a big revelation for me to see just how intricate the word games of religious people are. They have "academic" language like they are a legitimate area of study, but I think that they use language like that to keep skepticism at bay. Words like "magic" have connotations of skepticism, and disbelief so they need to use words like "miracle" and "divine" to make the concept of god more believable.
TL;DR: Religious people carefully control the words they use to describe their religion in order to make the weak case for a god more believable.
