The British Raj introduced the sport of Indian athletics during that period. The Athletics Federation of India was established in 1946 to manage the sport at the national level. Despite India's large population, few Indian athletes have ever won medals in major or global championships. The 21st century saw this change as Indians began to take more interest in athletics and local facilities were built to support the sport. It has been a successful Asian nation at a continental level, but it is still far behind Japan and China.
Three major athletics events are held at the national level: the Indian National Open Athletics Championships, Indian Inter State Senior Athletics Championships, and the quadrennial National Games of India. Indian National Championships was held between 1924 and 1961. The Indian Marathon Championships were first held in 1938. In 2015, the Indian Cross Country Championships celebrated 50 years of existence. In 2014, an Indian Racewalking Championships were established. There are also championships for the under-20 and 18-year-old athletes at sub-national and national levels.
