Three days ago I came across an article about new rules set up in a half marathon that surprised me. Usually you can be disqualified for cheating, like cutting corners or not wearing your race number or the tracker chip or something like that. This time the rules are a little bit different.
In north Wales’ largest sports event runners can be disqualified for dropping litter during the race. At first I didn't understand what kind of litter they are talking about as if you're participating as a runner, all you have at you is a napkin, not much is allowed and besides, you can't carry anything else.
Well, at the Conwy Half Marathon organizers want to reduce the environmental impact of the sporting event and that's why there are no plastic cups that were thrown all over the place during a race. Instead they are handing out edible water pods made from seaweed extracts. Also waste is allowed to dropped at the marked places, no more throwing plastic cups all over the place.
This looks like a good idea not because they can keep the place clean. No matter what event you are visiting, there will always be garbage thrown away. Here the most important aspect is to not use plastic. They can clean up after the event but plastic is something you can't just throw away as it has serious consequences.
This method is excellent I believe, runners don't have to stop to drink water, they can just swallow the capsule and continue running. This can be a good solution to adopt by other event organizers as well. I'm going to keep an eye on this to see if it's going to be adopted by others or not.
I also agree that this is a very brilliant idea. Plastics cause too much pollution than we can imagine. This pollution often graduate to flooding, especially in developing countries.
That capsule looks too big to be swallowed at once though. I hope it won't make athlete choke while they try to swallow it.

It's not too big and besides, it pops in your mouth, you don't have to swallow it as it is. It's a good solution, believe me.

I recently saw something about these, too! I think it is fantastic. When you look at the aftermath of some of the big races it really is astonishing how much trash is created. Makes you sick to see it. I'm all for finding ways to cut down on the junk and make events like that more eco-friendly.

I think no matter what you do, an event like this will always leave a lot of trash behind but if this can save us from plastic waste, then I'm all for it. You're more likely to taste it, I have zero chance here, so let me know :))

Nothing like keeping the sports more regulated so has to make it much more exciting for everyone while having a fair game for everyone
