Betting on the Wimbledon 2019 Final with Augur

I'm writing this to journal my experience using Augur to bet on the result of the Wimbledon 2019 final. The match, which is scheduled for 9 AM EST, will be between the current 1st and 2nd highest ranked tennis players, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Although I would have watched the match regardless, it's always more exciting when there's something on the line!

Augur

Heading into the match, Djokovic was the clear favorite to win, and this fact was expressed in the Augur market by the (mid-)price of 0.61 for the outcome of Novak's victory. A price of 0.61 per share means that the market predicts that there is a 61% chance that Djokovic will win. Since I predicted that there was a higher chance that he would beat Federer, I was happy enough to pay the 0.62 per share that was the best price offered at the time. On top of that, I only bought 0.01 shares, so I wasn't too worried by the high price.

MetaMask

After transferring the necessary funds to my newly created MetaMask account, I was ready to actually make the purchase. Since my bet was so small, I was worried that the fees weren't going to be low enough for the transaction to be worth it. I selected the "low" fee, which MetaMask warned might take up to ~8 minutes to be confirmed. Surprisingly, it took less than a minute and I ended up paying very little in gas. All in all, my bet went through super smoothly.

Conclusion

As I'm writing this there is still about a half hour left before the match starts, but I'm already nervous. I'm not much of a gambler, and I may never get used to having skin in the game, so to speak. Still, I'm looking forward to the match. Whatever happens, I hope it'll be a great final!
