Life and journey of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The journey of Aung San Suu Kyi to become the first State Counsellor is actually remarkable. She has not only created the position of the State Counsellor for helping the nation, but also has fought against all oddities to get to this level, even after going through lots of ups and downs, marriage and children, and political house arrest for 15 years.

The rise of the leader against the resistance
The kind of resistance she faced as the political leader was too much to demoralize anyone. However, she never lost her courage and fought a healthy political battle till date, to become a living example of what willpower and constant dedication can do.

She knew she will not be allowed to hold the post of the Myanmar president only because of the clause in the constitution that bars one from holding the post due to marriage with a foreign national. Yet this could not stop her from continuing as a great power to help the nation and society. She starting working as the first and current State Counsellor of the country, after her party won a colourful and sweeping victory with 86% of the Assembly of the Union seats, at the 2015 elections. This was a real whopping win because they secured more than 67% seats required for suggesting the party’s preferred candidate as President and vice-president.

Education and career

Her journey in politics was destined to happen because of her mother’s role in Burmese politics, and her posting in Nepal and India in 1960 as the Burmese ambassador. Thus Aung San Suu Kyi got the chance to do her higher education from the Delhi University from where she passed as a politics graduate. This was just the beginning for her. Her Master degree from the Oxford University, followed by her work experience of 3 years at the United Nations from the New York City, were really landmarks in her life and career. These made her the strong political woman she is now. But she isn’t just a politician. She is a multi-dimensional power, with experience in writing and diplomacy both.

Her rise with time

It was after her 3 years service at the United Nations, that she married and had two children. Marriage and motherhood only strengthened her more to form her political party, and her family was always supportive.

In 1988, she formed the National League for Democracy, and her party won the first time in 1990 elections. The win as by 81% seats, however, the victory was nullified because of the non-cooperation by Burmese Military. Yet she did not lose hopes. From 1989 to 2010, Aung San Suu Kyi faced a horrific troubled life due to the house arrest. Almost 15 years of her multi-dimensional multi-talented life was lost in the house arrest. She even had to manage without electricity and scarcity of resources from 2008 to 2009 after her house was badly damaged in a cyclone. Yet, she rose to fame, and now proudly presents the nation before the world, where her country’s people lovingly address her as Daw Suu and Amay Suu.
