Australia has embraced the US-led tradition of Black Friday shopping, as hundreds of retailers slash prices, looking to cash-in on the spending frenzy.

And it’s not just local retailers getting in on the action – many US-based stores, such as Macy’s, are offering flat rate shipping to Australia.

Calling the American Black Friday event the ‘biggest’ sale on travel site Expedia’s retail calendar, Expedia Australia’s Managing Director, Michael Person explained why the company was keen to bring in Australian consumers.

“It’s hugely popular with all our customers, so this year we have decided to share the love with our Australian customers, who we know love to bag a great deal,” he said.

Banks such as ING have also dropped fees on international purchases made online for the day, to entice Australians to make the most on overseas sales.

Amazon’s highly anticipated Australian launch was also slated to coincide with Black Friday, however there has yet to be an update to the Australian online shopfront.
