Australia is NOT a country: College student fails assignment because professor is stupid

Hey Australia, not sure if you heard - but according to a professor at Southern New Hampshire University, Australia is not a country.

As part of a sociology assignment, where students were to compare social norms in one country with the United States, used Australia as her comparison country.

The student failed, with the remark:

"Australia is a continent; it is not a country. That error made it nearly impossible for you to accurately complete your week 2 research outline correctly."

Australia is in fact both a continent and a country, a fact which means many Australians I've met don't really understand what a continent is. For the most part, they think "North America" means the northern part of the USA.

Fun fact, while often grouped with Australia, and even listed as a state in its constitution, New Zealand is part of a separate submerged continent called Zealandia. According to Wikipedia anyway.

Don't worry, the student was able to finally teach their professor some basic geography, and get a refund on their course fees.
