Wyndham City is taking a stand against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia and reaffirming its commitment to supporting the LGBTIQ community this IDAHOBIT.
The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia and (IDAHOBIT) is about recognising the challenges faced by members of our community who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and those who do not identify as any gender or sexual orientation.
Wyndham City’s Safer Communities portfolio holder, Cr Kim McAliney, is inviting residents to attend the IDAHOBIT—Rainbow Flag Raising Ceremony on Friday, 17 May where the rainbow flag and transgender flag will be proudly hoisted outside the Civic Centre. “We are asking the community to show solidarity to our LGBTIQ community and enjoy a morning tea together while we hear from guest speakers, meet some of the young participants from the LGBTIQ community and our local Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officers to extend your conversations,” said Cr McAliney.
“The significance of this date is important to note, as on this day in 1990 the World Health Organisation decided to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.”
The flag raising ceremony and speeches will begin at 10am at the Wyndham Civic Centre, 45 Princes Hwy, Werribee, followed by a free morning tea.
