Hallstatt - A church in Austria is home to a unique painting tradition. Not on canvas, which is painted is the original skull.
Hallstatt Catholic Church, St Michael Chapel was built in the 12th century. Behind the church is a room called Charnel House. This is where history and tradition begin.
In the 1700s, the church began to run out of places for new graves. Finally, it was agreed upon the old graves aged 10-15 years. The skull in the old tomb was moved into Charnel House aka Beinhaus Hallstatt.
