I don't think there's a dearth of evidence to show that backhanded authoritarianism is possibly the most common political view. You know, "I'm not an authoritarian. Yes, I was to mandate everything I think is good and ban everything I think is bad; but, I'm not an authoritarian." I would dare to say that that's the worldview of 99.9999% of the people on supposed "pro-science" pages on social media.
Aside from the fact that we all are supposed to understand that authoritarianism is bad and that wannabe authoritarians are all narcissists with delusions of grandeur, I don't think we regularly acknowledge the extent of the narcissism.
If people believe in mandating everything that they think is good and banning everything they think is bad, they're not just trying to show their virtue, they're trying to deprive every other person of his or her own virtue. It's really not possible to be good if your good actions were compelled through threat of force.
