Let's talk about Automated Backlinks

I’ve witnessed many people across a plethora of forums and message boards asking questions about automated backlinks and SEO services that provide this form of link building. Because there has been some interest in this area of SEO I thought I’d don my dear stalker hat, do my finest Sherlock Holmes impression (I would light a pipe to complete the look, but I doubt my lungs or heart would thank me) and carry out an investigation (of sorts) into automated link building and services of that ilk.
Upon reading the aforementioned forums and message boards I have seen a chorus of similar responses to automated backlink building services. These internet dwellers, like so many others, tar all automated backlink services with the same brush. I will admit that I nearly made the same mistake. However, as I like to examine all the evidence, I decided to not allow any pre-conceived conclusions to cloud my judgement (Sherlock wouldn’t allow this to happen, therefore neither can I).
When I hear the phrase ‘automated backlinks’ the first thought that comes to mind are programs like GSA and Xrumer. Although these two programs do have a part to play in SEO, there is no doubt that if one is seeking quality then one should stay away from said software (for tier 1 links at the very least). But (and that’s a big but), after digging a little deeper (rather than scratching the surface like the vast majority seem to do), there are some extremely solid services out there that will provide benefit(s) when used as part of an SEO project. The trick is to find them, which wasn't as easy I’d first hoped....
However, you’ll be pleased to know that I vowed to find the best service out there before writing and publishing this article (you can thank my tenacity of a bulldog for that. Or my parents for giving me these genetics. Either way, I’ll gladly receive the pat on the back).

Are automated backlinks and pyramid link building services the same thing?
Automated backlink building services do seem to be synonymous or intertwined with pyramid link building, therefore it necessary to inspect that area of SEO also.
Pyramid SEO and back linking has been around for donkey's years. I entered the SEO game way back in 2010 and it was all the rage. But is it still relevant in 2018 and what will its standing be in 2019?
After speaking to several SEO experts, in addition to forming my own conclusions re: pyramid link building, it is apparent that although it is not what it once was, it, if used properly, can still be extremely effective. The key, as you would expect, is quality. The first tier must be of the highest quality. We’re talking top notch content, authority sites, manual created web 2.0’s and platforms of that vintage. If there is even a whiff of spam you must immediately discard it from tier one and cast it onto the tier two (or tier three) pile. 2018 isn’t the time to be taking chances with backlinks.
Following tier one comes tier two (obviously). Personally, I think this is where the most change has occurred. It is my firm belief that having a second tier with quality nearly on a par with tier one is paramount. Gone are the days of having spam on both tiers two and three. I’d even go so far as to say that you should consider tier two as tier one part two.
Tiers three and four can, of course, contain backlinks from the above mentioned programs such as GSA and Xrumer, but even then I’d plump for niche relevant content and backlinks as much as possible.
Follow these guidelines and you’ll stand yourself in good stead.
