버라이존은 통신사이다. 사실 connected car를 완성하기 위해선 통신 연결은 필수적이라고 생각된다.
실제 자동차 네비게이션이 요즘 거의 모든 차에 장착되어 있지만 운전자들 중 대부분은 스마트폰에 있는 네비게이션을 이용한다. 차에 내장된 네비게이션은 업데이트의 불편성과 실시간 교통정보 반영에서 느리거나 불가하기 때문이다.
그런면에서 버라이존이 fleetmatics와 telogis를 인수해 connected car 분야에 진출한 것은 어제 언급한 반도체 시장의성장에 따른 내연의 확장 결과라고 해석할 수 있겠다.
버라이존은 위 두 기업의 인수를 통해 Mobile Workforce Division을 만들고 connected car에 본격 진출을 선언한 셈이다. 앞으로 반도체 시장에서 automotive 분야의 성장과 발전이 기대된다. 또한 한국의 대표 통신사인 SKT, KT, LG U+ 또한 그 행보가 주목된다.
