Autumn Storm Brush Brings Windy Raw Maybe Rainy Conditions

Good morning everyone. We have a busy week ahead as we nail down this complicated forecast. First and foremost, while we will be experiencing our first autumn storm for the season, this will not be a Sandy-like storm or anything close. As far as Nor'easters go, it wouldn't even rank in the top 50, so lets put that to bed and continue on with the forecast.

Clouds continue to haunt us and we have a thin band of showers moving through to our NW. This will eventually sink down, giving us some morning rain before finally exiting the area. We could see a late afternoon peek of sun, but don't get too excited because the clouds are moving back. Highs today in the mid to upper 60's and NE winds will continue making things feel cooler.

Low pressure is organizing and will move off the coast, then stall before having a chance to exit. It'll sit off Long Island and spill clouds and possible rain into the area. As low pressure strengthens and high pressure keeps it off of the coast, pressure gradient will increase and we should have ourselves a windy day tomorrow. Wind and the chance of rain will all depend on your location.

The strongest winds will be felt along the immediate shore and east end of Long Island. The chance of rain will increase as you head east as well, with the best chance being on the east end of Long Island as well. Expect ENE winds tomorrow 15-20mph with a few higher gusts. Along the immediate shore, we could see gusts in the 35-40mph range when winds peak from this system. The Forks of Long Island will see the strongest winds out of this, with gusts in the 50-55+ range possible.

Rough surf and winds will be the biggest "issue" out of this, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. Enhanced tides would be my 2nd concern, but we're also not at a full moon yet. Look for some minor coastal flooding possible, but more along the lines of the nuisance type that affects the notorious areas, such as Rockaway, Broad Channel, parts of Long Beach, Freeport, Baldwin, Lindenhurst, and so on. Everyone in these areas know what to expect and it'll be nothing out of the ordinary.

We'll bunch Wednesday and Thursday together forecast-wise and put both days in the low 60's and raw. We will also watch that precipitation field to see how close it gets and what sneaks in. Right now, I'd put the chance of rain between 40-60% for each day. It all depends on how close that low gets initially and/or if it retrogrades.

On Friday at this point I think we remain cloudy, raw. and breezy, but begin to dry out. Lack of precipitation will help us add a few degrees and we may see a few mid 60's away from the immediate shores.

Everything finally begins to pull away with the next system kicking that low out, and we should have partial clearing on Saturday, then maybe some full sunshine on Sunday. I'm going to hold off on the temps for the weekend right now and focus on getting this thing out of here before we go further.

Either way, I see an active fall pattern brewing and this week is just the beginning. Expect October to be doing October things this year.
