NYC LONG ISLAND GALE WATCH MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING POSSIBLE
Good morning everyone. We're a couple of days out from our Nor'easter here in the New York City/Long Island area and the pieces are pretty much all together in terms of what to expect and when.
EASTERN SATELLITE
For today, the core of the cooler air has arrived with a steady NW breeze, sunny skies, and highs in the low 50's (possibly upper 40's outside of the City). Overnight tonight, we dip down into the upper 30's to near 40 as outlying areas go into the upper 20's to mid 30's depending on how far away from the City you are. Areas in Suffolk County could see another round of frost where radiational cooling will be the strongest overnight. Tomorrow, we'll start off sunny, then increase the clouds as the day goes on with our approaching Nor'Easter.
Overnight tomorrow, winds will whip around to the east and become steady at around 15mph with a few higher gusts. Along the immediate shore, we could see 15-25mph sustained winds with a few higher gusts. Rain will begin to creep in after midnight tomorrow night, then become steadier and heavier at times as we head into Saturday morning.
Saturday looks to contain the bulk of the action in terms of the heaviest rain, strongest winds, and possibility of coastal flooding. Expect rain, heavy at times and winds 20-30 mph sustained with a few higher gusts to near 40, 25-35mph at the immediate shore with 45+mph gusts possible, and we could crack 40+mph sustained out on the east end of Long Island, with 50-60mph gusts possible.
Moderate coastal flooding concerns will be at the peak during the high tide cycle of Saturday mid/late morning. We could see minor to moderate coastal flooding in flood prone areas such as Rockaway, Broad Channel, Gerritsen Beach, Long Beach, Freeport, Baldwin, Lindenhurst and more. While it won't be a life threatening surge, those who live in areas that receive flooding during Nor'easters, should take action to protect property; especially cars parked in streets that notoriously flood.
As far as the rain aspect, New York City, coastal NJ, Long Island, and Coastal CT, should get a good 2-3" dose out of this. The good news is that this storm won't stick around long, which changes the dynamic for Sunday.
Saturday night, things will begin to calm down and steady rain will taper off to light and scattered showers. Clouds will be stubborn for the first part of Sunday, but we should see a few peeks of sun by late morning/afternoon. Look for breezy conditions and highs in the mid 50's. To start next week, a compact area of energy could swing through behind our system to give us another shot of rain Monday, but then we quickly clear out Tuesday and remaining cool.
Meanwhile, it looks as if I threw for a touchdown with that super long range Halloween forecast. Things are holding rock-steady and we should have a sunny day, breezy, and temps below normal in the the upper 40 to low 50 realm.
