NYC MILD DAY TODAY COLD WEEK AHEAD

Good morning everyone. If you're up early like me this morning, you're waking up to a rainy one here in the NYC area. Mild air will hang on today, but colder air will be swinging in during the week; possibly making next weekend interesting IF that cold, dry air doesn't push in too far.

Clouds linger all day, but the steadiest rain will depart by mid morning. It'll be mild due to warm air ahead of a cold front back in the Ohio Valley. That cold front may also be responsible for some scattered rumbles of thunder late morning to early afternoon. Highs today 55-60.

Colder air is slow to move in, so we'll have a fairly mild night today as lows don't dip below 50. Then we go for mid to upper 50's tomorrow with some sunshine, but it'll be a breezy one with steady westerlies 15-20mph at times.

Tomorrow night, the colder air begins to push in. Look for lows in the mid to upper 30's, which doesn't seem cold this time of year, but temps stay flat on Tuesday and won't rise. Lows Tuesday night will be in the mid to upper 20's, possibly some low 20's in outlying areas, then mid to upper 30's for Wednesday as highs.

Last week, indicators showed the possibility of a system for mid-week, but the cold, dry push was too strong to help along any development. For Thursday, we remain dry and sunny, highs "bounce back" into the upper 30's to low 40's, and we continue with that trend to finish the week on Friday.

As for next weekend, there's a lot of buzz on social media about a possible snowstorm for the Tri-state area. While there will be a strong Gulf-low emerging from the Southeast area, we'll have to wait and see if a reinforcing shot of cold air suppresses everything well to our south, or relaxes a bit and helps things move up the coast.

For those who have experience in dealing with these types of systems, they're very hard to pull off a snow event here in the NYC area, even in the dead of winter. This is because Gulf-sourced lows are very juicy and warm. You have to have the perfect ingredients to make AND keep things all snow in our area when one of these bad boys visit the neighborhood.

So for now we will continue to watch things closely. We'll also be keeping an eye on my Hail-Mary Christmas forecast, in which I said we had a very good shot at a cold, sunny, and windy Christmas Day.
