Fresh off the back of their triumphant tour of the UK, President Street are gearing up to release their new single 'I Found Me', which is set to be the sound of the Autumn. We caught up with this exciting new pop duo and talked touring, the songwriting process and their plans for the future...
Hi there! So what have President Street been up to this year?
Hey guys! Its been a great year for us. We’ve been really busy writing and recording and of course getting over to the UK earlier in the year was definitely the highlight.
You were recently over here touring some of your new material, how was that experience?
It was such a fantastic experience for us. It was our first tour of the UK and the reception we received from radio and everyone we came into contact with was awesome. We are so humbled by the support we’re receiving over there!
The other amazing thing about the tour was that, apart from the radio, we did a number of acoustic shows around the country and we got to see so many places that are not on the typical tourist map and meet some really great people that we wouldn’t otherwise.
Can you give us any hints about what you have planned for the future….?
We have a lot going on at the moment. Since returning from the UK we’ve hit the studios pretty hard and we’ve got a number of new tracks that we’re super excited about. We’re also quietly buzzing about being introduced to an amazing UK talent that will help work on our next song and we can’t wait to share more news about that soon!
What are you touring plans, are you going to be heading over here again anytime soon?
Our team in the UK are working hard to get us back over there before the end of the year and we’re really hoping they can make it happen ☺
What can we expect from your forthcoming releases?
More of the same in the fact that we’re not focused at all on genre and we’re all about really finding an emotion and really playing it out in our songs.
But our next track to be released will definitely be higher tempo than our “Can’t Go On” and much more energetic.
Talk us through your Songwriting process from start to finish, how do you get the ball rolling?
As we said we’re not bothered by genre at all when we write and we try to let each song develop naturally to capture the emotion we’re focusing on for that particular song.
We are always writing lyrics down and sometimes we build songs off the back of the lyrics and other times we start with music and then either using existing lyrical ideas or just let new ones flow.
We’ve definitely found that our songwriting tends to work best when we immerse ourselves in it and take our time rather than jump in the studio for an hour or two to put things down. We usually lock ourselves away for 2 days at a time and hope that we walk out with something cool!
When did you realise that music was something you wanted to pursue professionally?
It’s different for both of us as we had quite different paths. Ruby was singing before she could talk pretty much and has been singing her whole life (though not always in public!) so she’s always had the itch. For Pete his journey was very different and, although he came from a really musical family, his childhood meant he didn’t discover music until a bit later in life than the typical muso. But for both of us, it’s definitely taken over our lives in the last 4 years!
And finally… whose music are you obsessed with at the moment?
We both have pretty diverse tastes but lately, when we’ve got together we’ve had a heap of Michael Jackson on rotation. We gotta say that we try to listen without any bias because of recent allegations and just appreciate the songwriting and his performances and it’s so amazing to us how they have withstood the test of time. Really inspiring.
