Plane in a conveyor belt! Will it take off?

in aviation •  7 years ago

Imagine a 747 is sitting on a conveyor belt, as wide and long as a runway. The conveyor belt is designed to exactly match the speed of the wheels, moving in the opposite direction

Would the plane take off?!

Yes if the jet's engines are on attempting a take off. No if they are not on, unless there is a very strong gust of head wind that comes along. (It is the jets motion relative to the air that counts, not relative to the conveyor belt.) Neglecting small friction between belt and plane.
