Currumbin Gold Coast Attractions

Currumbin is a southern suburb of the Queensland Gold Coast with glorious surf beaches, a clean estuary for water sports and plenty to see and do.

Currumbin is at the southern, quieter, more natural end of the Gold Coast, away from the high rise, high energy centres of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach and away from the main theme parks. It has a great deal to offer visitors who want a gentler, more relaxed, nature-based holiday.

Proximity to Gold Coast Airport

One of the chief advantages of Currumbin is its proximity to the Gold Coast Airport at Tugun. Currumbin is no more than ten minutes drive, less than $20 in a taxi, and even accessible by bus. Though small, Gold Coast Airport is an international entry point from a few Asian centres and New Zealand. Currumbin is also well serviced by the Surfside bus service.

Southern Gold Coast Beaches

Currumbin itself has an excellent expanse of beach with good broad sand. Across the road, there is a scattering of eateries and surf shops, along with plentiful motel, apartment and holiday flat rentals. Popular accommodation places include absolute beachfront Sanctuary Beach Resort, the large Rocks Resort and smaller offerings such as Little Cove, Sandcastles and The Hill Apartments.

Currumbin Estuary

Not only are the beaches spectacular, but the mouth of the Currumbin Creek is a wonderful water playground, where visitors can learn to surf, try kite surfing, wind surfing and stand-up paddle-boarding, as well as more conventional pursuits such as fishing and swimming. The Currumbin Creek is one of the cleanest, prettiest waterways on the coast, with broad sandy still water beaches suitable for toddlers and babies. Accessible by footbridge, the other side of the estuary, designated Palm Beach, has a great swimming cove, the Pirate Playground and Dunes coffee shop… and, of course, more beach.

Currumbin Attractions

Apart from the beaches, the most famous attraction of the suburb is the Currumbin Wildlife Park, which features wild bird feeding and a great assortment of Australian animals. Nearby is Surf World, the Gold Coast’s only surfing museum, and Superbee Honey World. Not far afield are the natural attractions of the Currumbin Rock Pools and Mount Cougal National Park, which follows the course of the headwaters of the Currumbin Creek.

Currumbin Restaurants

As might be expected, Currumbin is not wall-to-wall restaurants as Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach areas are; nevertheless, there are opportunities for both budget and fine dining. Apart from the Point Restaurant at the Rocks resort, the Beach Shack and Elephant Rock Café, which are both across the road from the surf beach, most Currumbin dining is further back in the township along Currumbin Creek.

There you will find the elegant French restaurant Allure, Hanazono Teppanyaki, the seafood restaurant right on the water, Creek and a great corner fish and chip shop, Thrower’s. The service club dining scene is well covered with the Currumbin Sports Club, RSL Club and the brilliantly-positioned Vikings Surf Lifesaving Club.

Currumbin offers the ideal family holiday with plenty of free outdoor activities, but only a bus ride or drive away from the Gold Coast hotspots and major theme parks.
