If you were about to adopt, whom would you choose? A healthy, strong, pretty baby, right? That's what almost everyone would do. But this couple had enough courage to adopt a baby that they knew was going to die.
Allison and Josh Lewis wanted to adopt only one child. When they went to North Caroline to request custody, they received a call from their lawyer about the twins that had just been born. The couple was happy, but their happiness didn't last long... "One of them won't live long", they heard on the other end of the line.
"When we arrived to the waiting room, we saw a perfectly healthy boy that every nurse wanted to hold, and a his sister, abandoned aside, - recalls Allison. - She was fragile and vulnerable. She didn't have a brain. Doctors said we shouldn't take her home, because she would die very soon."
Ava was born very small - near 1 kilo - and she had only half of the brain. She wouldn't live long. Allison and Josh needed to decide if they leave her in the hospital, or take her home. Their decision was obvious: they wanted to give this baby at least several hours, days or weeks of love.
So they welcomed Sam and Ava in their family. They took them home to meet their brothers and sisters (4 biological and one adopted). Sam was feeling great, but Ava was in constant pain, her heart was barely beating... We can only imagine what would have happened if she had stayed in the hospital. The parents knew that she wouldn't live long, but they did everything to make her feel loved and to a have a home full of love and warmth.
She lived for 178 days, but it was enough for the whole family to fall in love with her. She was buried in a wooden coffin made by her father.
