Weather Conditions Improving Warm Into Saturday
Before Backdoor Front Arrives
Clouds have been lingering all day. In fact it was rather cold with some sleet falling in some areas around midday but now this weak offshore system is pulling slowly away to the east and weather conditions across Long Island will improve tonight with skies at least partially clearing out with temperatures by morning down in the low to mid 30s but if skies clear with light winds, cold spots in Suffolk County will be in the 20s by morning. At least sunshine on Wednesday will bring temperatures up into the 50s for the first time in days. 50 has been a tough nut to crack during a time when the average high is close to 60. We should at least make lower 50s Wednesday afternoon with sunshine and clouds. There is the risk for a passing shower as a weak upper air disturbance moves through later in the afternoon and evening.

Radar is showing improvement this evening though it does remain active in upstate NY where some lake effect snow and rain showers. Those should diminish as we move into the overnight period and they are no threat to us.
Thursday temperatures march higher with highs reaching the lower 60s with clouds and some sun. Another late shower is possible with a weakening front coming through. The air on Friday will be coming from the west southwest as high pressure to the south brings up warm air. Highs will be in the mid 60s to near 70 except along the immediate coast and the East End where the ocean wind develops in the afternoon and knocks temperatures down.

Saturday on Long Island is tough. It would seem at least the first half of the day we will see sunshine and temperatures running toward or even into the 70s however that backdoor cold front is a problem. Does it wait until late aftertnoon or evening to move through or does it move through faster and bring in cooler moist air from the east? This is a big forecast dilemma. It would seem that West Nassau would be fine until late in the day while the eastern part of Suffolk County sees an earlier cool down.
We certainly have the potential to reach these highs even if the backdoor front moves through faster. In either case, Sunday does not look like a good day at all with an ocean wind, low clouds and light rain/drizzle with temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s with the likelihood of heavy rain or showers developing later Sunday into Sunday night and Monday. Enjoy the nice weather while we have it because a blocky pattern returns next week with cooler than average temperatures again.
