* Welcome everyone, I am Maria Sole Scollo from GARR-CERT staff, and I'll talk about backup. * In this brief presentation I'll show what backup is, why do it, how and when to do it. * First of all: backup is the procedure for making copies of files or other items of data, in the case the original is lost or damaged. * So, why backup is so important: there is a real possibility of lost data because of - hardware or software failure, - unintentional data deletion, - Hacking or virus infection, - natural disasters (such as floods, earthquakes or fires) * The other important reason is because the data recovery, even when possible, it is always very complicated and expensive. * How to backup: There are different way you can save your copy of file such as off-line on external hard disk, or on-line on cloud or using a Network Attached Storage (NAS). * You can also use a backup program (like EaseUS Todo Backup) To make the best choice you have to compare the pros and cons of this different metods, but the best choice is always to use more than one of them.
* If you decide for cloud, for security reason, we suggest you to encrypt data before their transmission in the cloud * remember to do backup not only of data but also of the configuration of devices like router, firewall, switch, ecc.. * Last but not least: when to backup. * every time that there is an update of critical data, however it's important to proceed with regulary complete system backup. * if you're having trouble remembering, please save this date: 31 march. That's the world backup day. * * Finally, just a reminder: * - save all importat file of all your devices (pc, smatphone, tablet,ecc) * - make more then one copy of data even on different support * - to prevent local theft of copies, ensure that removable devices containing backups are not permanently accessible from the system * - Beware of inserting unknown usb devices into systems.
