IF YOU THINK IT HAS BEEN MORE HUMID THIS SUMMER...IT HAS

LONG ISLAND SUMMER HUMIDITY WELL ABOVE AVERAGE

MORE OPPRESSIVE WEATHER WEDNESDAY THURSDAY

oppressive summer humidity

We are suffering under oppressive summer humidity this afternoon combined with temperatures that reached near 95 in some the warmest spots in Nassau & Northwestern Sufflok County this afternoon. Temperatures this evening as the map shows have dropped off the highs but we are still in the upper 80s and lower 90s. The humidity on Long Island has been especially high with dew points in the 70s to near 80 which is making for ridiculously high heat indices.

oppressive heat humidity

The dew points have been so off the wall because of the either the southeast wind or the southwest wind that has been the dominating wind here for much of the time since mid July. If you think the summer has been more humid than average..guess what? It has been. In fact this has been the most humid summers we have seen in almost 50 years.

oppressive heat humidity

The chart above shows how many hours the dew points at Islip have been above 70 this summer. Notice the huge spike for this summer. We seem to be running double the average of a typical summer. Much of this has been since mid July which means the humidity has been virtually unrelenting. 800 hours of dew points over 70 divided by 24 hours in a day works out to over 33 days of oppressive humidity when we look at the raw numbers. Since we had days where it was oppressive for at least part of the day, it is likely that the actual number of days is much higher. This has been the ultimate bad hair summer.

EASTERN SATELLITE LOOP

Satellite loops show us in mostly cloud free conditions and the radars are very quiet here. You would think with all the tropical air that we could manage a pop up thunderstorm or two but the atmosphere is just too stable for that. Another steamy oppressive night tonight with lows in the mid 70s will be followed by another oppressive day on Wednesday with highs reaching 90 to 95 except maybe at the beaches it will be in the "cooler" 80s. Humidity levels will remain oppressively high into Thursday before a cold front puts an end to all this.Friday and Saturday look for lots of clouds, an onshore wind and temperatures just in the 70s along with some passing showers.
