ভূমধ্যসাগর থেকে ৪৭৬ জন অভিবাসীকে উদ্ধার করেছে একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগঠন, যার মধ্যে বেশ কিছু বাংলাদেশি রয়েছেন। স্পেনের উপকূল এবং লিবিয়ার সমুদ্র উপকূল থেকে তাদের উদ্ধার করা হয়। এরা সাগরপাড়ি দিয়ে ইউরোপ যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করছিল।
রবিবার প্রো-অ্যাক্টিভা ওপেন আর্মস নামে স্পেনভিত্তিক একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগঠন তাদের উদ্ধার করে। উদ্ধার হওয়া অভিবাসীদের মধ্যে বাংলাদেশ, মিসর, লিবিয়া, নাইজেরিয়াসহ বিভিন্ন দেশের নাগরিক রয়েছেন।
বার্তা সংস্থা এপি জানিয়েছে, মানব পাচারকারী ও অভিবাসীরা পৃথক নৌকা নিয়ে ইউরোপের উদ্দেশে যাচ্ছিলেন। ভূমধ্যসাগরের মাঝখানে পাচারকারীরা তাদের নৌযানের ইঞ্জিন খুলে নিয়ে চলে যায়। ১৫টি ছোট নৌকায় করে এরা বিপজ্জনক সাগর পাড়ি দিচ্ছিল।
জাতিসংঘের হিসাবে এবছর ভূমধ্যসাগর পাড়ি দিয়ে ইউরোপে যাওয়ার চেষ্টাকালে ৬১৫ জন অভিবাসী মারা গেছেন। সংস্থাটি বলছে, চলতি বছর মোট ২২ হাজার ৪৩৯ জন ইউরোপে পৌঁছেছেন।
