The Gospel of Saint Matthew tells us how the baptism of Jesus was, one of the most emotional moments in the life of Jesus. The baptism of Jesus contains in itself one of the mysteries of the holy trinity, because with the baptism the heavens opened, and so under the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and the Father, with a voice that came down from heaven, referred to Jesus as his beloved son.
Like Jesus, all Christians are called to this visible sign, to this sacrament, which represents the interior cleansing of man. The baptism symbolizes the passage from a life full of sins to a life of righteousness ("Do to others what you would have them do to you" Matthew 7:12), this is the fundamental change to which God calls us, to leave the temptations of the flesh and the desires of the world to accept the dictates of the spirit ("Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" Matthew 5:48), and thus be co-creators with God, the sense of life is to increase the order and the perfection of the universe. Sin is painful, both for oneself and for others, but instead, the spiritual gift of righteousness leads us to the true happiness and the eternal life.
With these words the Gospel of Matthew tells us of the baptism of our Lord by John the Baptist:
"Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, ´I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?´
Jesus replied, ´Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.´ Then John consented.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ´This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.´" Matthew 3:13-17.
