Baseball player Loek van Mil is in a critical condition in the Canberra hospital. The pitcher of the Dutch squad and Australian team Brisbane Bandits sustained serious head injuries on Saturday in an incident that, according to his club, has nothing to do with baseball.

Van Mil was in Canberra for the Brisbane Bandits match against Canberra Cavalry, but the 34-year old Brabander is under contract with the Dutch top club Neptunus. Last year he took the national title with that club by excelling in Holland Series against Amsterdam.

Since 2016, Van Mil also plays in Australia in the winter months. The 2.16-meter long pitcher was previously active in the United States and Japan. He took the European title two years ago with the Dutch national team and is a fixture in the selection at the big tournaments.

The Van Mil family is on its way to Australia. "We wish Loek and his family a lot of strength," said Neptunus and the Dutch baseball-union.
