Several computer repair stores locally save laptop battery packs for me. I buy them for salvage / recycle prices, and break them down for the individual cells they contain. About six of these cells will need to be reset, and maybe three will test bad, so I will get about 60 good cells. With the five dollar cost, and some plastic pipe, I have a 25 amp, 24 volt battery. These cells are rated for 15,000 deep cycles, of which 1000 are likely used. This leaves slightly over 38 years use, at a deep cycle every day. Each 2.5 amp, 24 volt battery stick will cost me about a dollar. I will install about 350 of these sticks, to run my lake area homestead. If I buy new cells to make my batteries, they will cost me about two dollars a battery for the batteries only. Here is a picture of the cells salvaged from one trip.

I look forward to watching your journeu to building a DIY powerwall. Do you have any solar yet? I have posted about my current simple solar setup.

I have 1500 watts of factory panels, and another 2000 I will build myself. I will add a wind generator that is rated at 1800 watts, but will deliver more like 450 watts here (based on our avg wind) I ordered in the initial 50 of the TMos Power FETs (MTP3055E) to begin the initial build. Trying to determine the valus of the cathode resistor (leaning towards 0.05 ohms) for current monitoring. Everything is in 24 Volt, and I will run as much of the house on 24 volts as possible. Building the lights now, will indirect with LEDs dimmed with pulse Width Modulation (PWM)
I can begin the solar system with the batteries I have (6000 Watts), but I want at least 21000.
Unfortunately, moving out to the new land first is top priority. I do want the first bucket built, so I can finish my software in the controller.

I am still digging your method of reusing them. Keep us posted.

Here are a couple of other salvage runs. I have five thousand watts of batteries that were close to free. When I run out of time, I will buy the rest I need from new stock, but this is so much more fun, LOL!
And they look like this, when I split them....
