Sony offers free games to everyone during lockdown.... kinda

in battle •  4 years ago

When I heard that Sony was going to be giving out free games to people during the "stay at home" orders going on worldwide I thought to myself "oh, that's really nice of Sony!" and i was really looking forward to the wonders of free games that I was going to be subjected to.

I switched on my PS4 and went straight to the store with a sense of glee like a kid running down the stairs on Christmas day. The anticipation was killing me and at that point I was actually groaning a bit thinking about how it was no doubt going to take ages for the wondrous library of free games to download.

So when i finally got to the download page I couldn't believe my eyes, and not in a good way.

I'm not saying these are bad games, they aren't. The problem is that if you are gamer at all, there is a really great chance that you have already finished these games back when they were released a decade ago. Also, both of these games were already given away to anyone that has a Playstation Plus membership. I know that I already had, and completed, both of them.

Now I know the old adage of "never look a gift horse in the mouth" but this almost seems like Sony is only being half generous since there probably aren't very many people out there that these titles are going to be "new" for. I suppose that we should be grateful that they are offering us anything, but let's just keep in mind that Pornhub gave away free premium memberships to everyone on the planet weeks ago!

Journey is pretty wild I guess, because it is one of those games where I don't think a single word of dialogue is spoken throughout the entire game yet you have a story in your head about what was going on at the end of it. It's pretty artistic in that regard and overall I would say far more inventive than Uncharted which is basically Tomb Raider with a dude.

Is it a little cheeky that a lot of the interpretation of Journey is the suggestion that the "journey" is someone traveling to the afterlife because they have recently died? That was the impression that I got out of it.

On another note, Ubisoft was giving away Assassin's Creed 2 for free on Steam and Uplay so there is also that. Unfortunately this offer expired on the 17th so I apologize for even mentioning this since you can't have it now. This game is also over a decade old and I don't mean to be a wet blanket here but these gifts, while appreciated, aren't exactly great offerings. Maybe I am just being overly negative - that's how I am wired.

So I suppose I should say thanks because they didn't have to do any of this and they are almost certainly seeing increased sales during this period, particularly with online sales. So thanks Sony and Ubisoft, for giving games that I already owned, for free :P

Oh, here you are.. lol I was wondering where you've been, but I was looking on the wrong platform.

hey buddy! i really should have you on discord, ya know?

Never did play Journey.. I think they gave it away one month on the subscription, so I do have it.. but only if I re-sub. I know you rated it.. one day. I'm still playing Ni Nu Kuni 2.

That is so cool, Sony gives away free games, that turns out not so productive for you but others can have fun with that who have no such game yet.
Kuddos to Sony and other very rare platform to provide somethings for free just for entertainment purpose in such a situation where all the companies are facing major loss.

well i don't think that video game manufacturers are suffering during this. They are probably making record profits. More people at home = more people downloading games :)

Ya, Games manufactures might be facing major sales profit during this time.
