What Is The Best System Ever? SNES Vs Playstation 2?

in battle •  5 years ago

When it comes to what was the best system of all time it usually comes down to 2. There is the Super Nintendo and the Playstation 2 (though a lot of people would argue n64 should be on the list). Both are great systems that deserve the title but we are here to pick one. I will give my vote at the end but let me know what you think. And for you vote you cannot include ps 1 games on the backwards compatible ps2. It has to be based solely on playstation 2 titles (but don't worry there are a lot of them.)

Super Nintendo:

I would say this was Nintendo in its prime but Nintendo is still going strong. With the exception of some ps1 games you had the best 2D gaming on the snes. There was Super Mario World which took Super Mario 3 to another level. You had Super Metroid and the Mega Man X series. And then there was the Donkey Kong Country games which are still a blast to play today. Besides side-scrollers you had some of the top RPGs like ff6, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger. There were beat em ups like Final Fight, puzzle games like Tetris Attack and the fighting game we all spent hours playing Street Fighter 2. Who could forget NBA Jam and other fun sports games? From Star Fox to the Star Wars games this system had something for everyone. This was the console that brought the arcade home, and although it was not as good as the arcade experience, it did a good job of emulating the titles you spent your quarters on. It was also a great console to play with a friend and as the games were at the top of the 2d life-span they still age really well. You can still pick up a Super Nintendo and it would be as fun as it ever was.

Playstation 2:

You might not know how many great games on the ps2 if you didn't look. Lets start with the masterpiece that is Silent Hill 2, that has a story of incredible depth. When it came to fighting games there was Soul Calibur 2 and . There are countless RPGs including Dragon Quest 8. You got GTA 3 and San Andreas which changed the open world games. This is the console with Resident Evil 4 arguable one of the beset in the franchise and Metal Gear 3. There was the artistic Ico and Shadow of the Colossus games, both of which you should play if you get the chance. There were a lot of great games to compete with Mario including the game I have yet to play Psychonauts. And also a list of sports games. What makes ps2 one of the best consoles is the seer number of games on it, over 3,800. When it came to story games this was one of the best consoles and really showed why Sony has a place in the market.

I am going to give my vote to Super Nintendo personally but that might be more nostalgia.

How about you? And if you want to throw a vote in for another system feel free.

I had both and I can assure you it was a good time to be alive. But today, I find myself spinning up a snes emulator - something I do not do quite as much for the PS2.

They both had amazing games in their own way and while PS2 had a great selection of games of variety and fun, SNES is the clear winner. The combination alone of DK and Mario games with nostalgia and the atmosphere etc brought added a whole new level of amazing before the PS2 was thought of. SNES I would pick going back to first as well, though I do have a PS2 sitting here in my room, playable, but I go back to my SNES emulator a lot more. ;)

I liked NES the best. I think it was the first console that everyone owned or wanted to own.
I definitely liked PS2, but the loading times and scratched discs sometimes killed it for me.

I lost count of how many scratched discs I have

For its time, I would say snes too. Mainly for the easier to care for cartridges rather than the easily scratched discs and laser that needed cleaning.

As for games, I can’t really remember which one had the better selection.

Nowadays, it seems the PlayStation is closer to the pc gamers choice while the Nintendo stuff is more suited to families? I would go ps4 now.

Of the systems you mention, I would go with the SNES thought the Genesis would be real close. The 16-bit era really represents the peak of 2D game development and there a lot of great games that just work better that way in my opinion. I vastly prefer 2D platformers to 3D platformers for instance. Of course, more modern machines are capable of spectacular 2D games but that's not where the best development efforts are placed.

But best system ever? The Commodore 64 without a doubt. :)

I'm going to love this gaming community. I was a big gamer years ago. I'd have to say earthbound(mother) was one of the first rpg games that captivated me. I had enjoyed previous titles, but not like that. Not for the time period. Super mario is and always will be the shit too! That's why it hasn't died. It just has that re-play-ability with that arcade style that never goes out of style. Kinda like pac-man and ms.pac-man. I could get down with those to this day! Galaga as well! Zelda is another strong one for me, that one was really fun to play through, even a few times over. Castlevania is another that did well, imo, through the years. My favorite was probably symphony of the night for PS1, for ps2 I wasn't lucky enough to try playing curse of darkness, but lament of innocence was pretty fun too. :)

For PS2 and really all of PS (Haven't tried the most recently released versions.) Metal Gear has been amazing. I loved the tactical aspect. The puzzles, the characters. Loved it. Looking back though, that could be why I'm so fucked up lol. Psycho mantis was a truly messed up character and so were so many others. The plot was great to me! The graphics were pretty good(for the time) too. Metal gear 3 was pretty cool, the graphics were definitely a million times better. lol. I liked the way they progressed the series and added new ways to go about things. The weapons were always fun to use as well. I feel they gave a great amount of variety throughout the series.

GTA san andreas was amazing, ofc. Whole series has been. Can't match that style of gaming very easily, many have tried. lol. Final Fantasy X was great, again, another series that I've always loved.

Shit like resident evil scared the hell out of me.

All in all. I'd say that although I grew up loving snes, as playstation began advancing further, I'd have to say due to the graphics alone, in a direct comparison, PS2 is a win for me, by far. Based on depth of games and re-play-ability, snes actually ties it for me with PS2. They are both great in their own respects. Nintendo as a whole has progressed well, so I enjoy a lot of the titles that come out from them nowadays as well. Going back to Zelda; Playing breath of the wild was incredible. Seeing how far that franchise had come and how great they did with their open world concept was astonishing. The gameplay didn't feel completely foreign from those of the past either. It retained it's "Zelda" feel.

Sorry, may have rambled. I love posts like this though. Gaming is something I don't have a hard time discussing. ;)

Prince of Persia was another great title I enjoyed. The parkour-esque puzzles in it along with the combat and the ability to shift time was a great concept! Jak and Daxter was great to play through once or twice. Then there's the whole Tony Hawk series, that was pretty fun to play with friends and compete to see who could score the most.

Oops. Rambling again. :)

lol feel free to ramble. Us gamers are passionate. I miss the Tony games.

Depends on the game..
