Kwa-Zulu Natal Beaches

The KwaZulu-Natal coastline stretches from the Mozambique Border to the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape Province, a distance of 200 km.

The province is home to two World Heritage Sites, the first being iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly known as the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park) situated in the far north of the province bordering on Mozambique and the second being the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism awarded Blue Flag statues for the year 2022/2023 to nine beaches in KZN; uShaka Beach, Durban North and Point Beach in eThekwini (Durban) and six on the South Coast – namely Marina Beach near Southbroom, Trafalgar Beach near Marina Beach, Southport Beach, Umzumbe Beach or Pumula Beach, Ramsgate Beach and Hibberdene Beach. There are 21 selected Pilot Beaches; 2 Special Awards beaches being Marina Beach and Southport Beach.

Public Game Reserves in KwaZulu-Natal include: Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, (the largest and also the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa) with the Big Five, iSimangaliso Wetland Park (World Heritage Site), Mkuze Game Reserve (a birders paradise with an abundance of bird species all year round), Tembe Elephant Park (world-renowned for its Elephants) and Ndumo Game Reserve (situated on the border of Mozambique and was part of the Ivory Route in days gone by and is also part of the Lubombo TransFrontier Conservation Area with The Kingdom of eSwatini and Mozambique. All of these reserves are located on and are administered by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

KwaZulu-Natal boasts having four coastal Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s): iSimangaliso on the North Coast and Aliwal Shoal, Protea Banks and Trafalgar all on the South Coast. There are four Offshore MPA’s: iSimangaliso and uThukela Banks on the North Coast with Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks on the South Coast. All of these areas have some of the most magnificent diving sites in the world with sea life and coral endemic to this area only.

KwaZulu-Natal has it all – a paradise of a holiday destination with plenty of sea, sun, mountains and wildlife and sea life.
