5 Things that Make a Beard Trimmer Good in 2019

In this day and age, there are hundreds of beard trimmers to choose from.

Scouring for reviews for the best beard trimmer, you can find many that are top-tier, but what is it that really makes beard clippers "good" or above average. I mean, most of them seem to do the exact same thing?

Well. Here's five things that every good beard trimmer needs to get right:

1. Beard Trimmer Battery Life

The best beard trimmers of 2019 come with high-quality Li-ion battery.

But this wasn't always the case, as it wasn't long ago that Ni-MH was the leading battery choice, which itself wasn't "bad", but provided less use time for a longer charge time.

It's safe to say that Lithium-ion batteries have fixed this issue and the top trimmers now come with impressive ~60-90 minute charge times that provide up to 5-hours of trimming time.

Sadly, some manufacturers still resort to the Ni-MH battery, which at the standards and competition of 2019, just won't cut it.

Bottom line: make sure your beard trimmer has a powerful Li-ion battery and not Ni-MH or other out-dated alternatives.

2. Blade Type and Functionality

Central to all facial hair trimming is the blade.

And if your trimmers blade structure is out-dated, your grooming experience will be less than satisfying in most cases.

In 2019, the beard trimmer industry has evolved to a point where the standard is to use hypoallergenic stainless-steel or ceramic blades with self-sharpening ability.

the Philips Norelco 7000 for example, which is considered to be one of the leading facial hair trimmers for men as of now, has a special dual cut blade design which has 2x more blades than the trimmers from few years ago used, and the self-sharpening mechanism prevents them from ever going dull.

3. Powerful Electric Trimmer Motor

If you are buying a beard trimmer, you simply can't have the manufacturer under-delivering when it comes to the motor.

Especially if you have long and thick beard, which requires not only sharp blades but also good torque to trim down.

Currently, the most powerful trimmer engine for beards can be found in the Panasonic ER-SB40-K, as its linear motor gives out an impressive 9800 cuts-per-minute (CPM), which is easily enough for any hair your body can throw at it.

Some of the "new" and trendy products like the Philips Norelco OneBlade Pro simply cannot provide this type of cutting power, which is why many men with thick and coarse beards have complained that the product simply doesn't live up to the hype.

4. The Weight of the Beard Clippers

Facial hair trimmers used to be big and bulky.

But the times have changed and now most brands are able to provide plenty of cutting power in a very small & light housing.

Don't get me wrong, some clippers still weigh more than 10 oz, which is beginning to be unacceptable in 2019, but certain brands have managed to push this number down to even below 3 oz, which is barely any weight at all.

I'm going to bring up the Panasonic ER-SB40-K again here, as it's the lightest trimmer around with just 2.99 oz weight. Since this very same trimmer also has the most powerful motor, one can only be impressed by their progress.

5. It Functions as a Stubble Trimmer

One of the most popular beard styles - and a style that women are proven to love - is the stubble.

In studies, women rate men with the heavy stubble to be the most attractive, and a good way to achieve this is by using a beard trimmer that also functions as an electric stubble shaver.

For this function, the newly released Philips OneBlade Pro is one of the best choices, but if you don't need the options of cutting down longer beards, the Conair Super Stubble is another good alternative.
