The false beatitude: Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. Psalm 62:10

The Psalm 62 speaks of the trust in God, and of the false beatitude, of that deceitful happiness based on the apparent goods. The sensible man, the God-fearing man, should not be confused by appearances, the Psalm explains, because only God is the only salvation of man. In a world delivered to sin, where the only solution is selfishness and the save himself whoever can, it is clear that spirituality does not make any sense. That is why the Psalm tells us that only God can provide with the true goods that man needs to live, God is the true rock in the storm of confusion, lies, and deceit that the world shows to man.
With this prayer to the Lord begins the Psalm, only in the wisdom of God can man build sure:
"Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken" Psalm 62:1-2.
And the trust that man must place in God means in practical terms that only God should be feared and not men, because men are just a breath of the wind in the eternity of God, explains the Psalm:
"Surely the lowborn are but a breath,
the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance, they are nothing;
together they are only a breath" Psalm 62:9.
And the Psalm continues to teach us another common mistake to avoid, love for the things of the world; many fools in history have put their trust in power and fear and by the same method they fell, so fell Assyria and also Babylon. The false beatitude exists and all the prophets have spoken about it, whoever puts all his hope in the apparent goods is destined to fall.
With these words, the psalm expresses this spiritual teaching:
"Do not trust in extortion
or put vain hope in stolen goods;
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them" Psalm 62:10.
Because at the end the Psalm tells us, those who put their trust in the Lord put their hope safe:
"Power belongs to you, God,
and with you, Lord, is unfailing love" Psalm 62:11.
